If I lose one day of hunting by spooking deer, but save 10 or more deer from that coyote, I think my odds of tagging a deer are better.

As for bullet and damage to the mangy varmint, the more damage the better, it is much easier to pick out, if there is only "1 square inch " of fur salvageable after the kill shot,
Years ago, I went into a bush on the trail of a buck. Part way through the bush, I heard a rifle shot. A ways further along the tracks, there is a bunch of skidding and scrambling and the tracks head off in a different direction. When I get out of the bush I was told that some one had taken a shot at a coyote but nobody had seen the deer.
If some body hadn't taken a poke at a coyote I think the deer would have come out right in front of them.
On a side note here, last week as I was driving by the black bear grazing reserve a big buck went ripping across the road, not 3 seconds later a huge lone coyote went flying behind him.
