Exclamation Health Canada announces recall of Bauer hockey helmet models

Published on: December 23, 2015 | Last Updated: December 23, 2015 6:47 PM MST

Bauer Hockey Corporation is recalling three goalie masks after 11 cases — 10 of which occurred in Canada and one in the United States — that resulted in the cracking or breaking of the masks upon impact with the puck.

Consumers of the Bauer Concept C1 Goal Mask with Certified Titanium Oval Wire, Bauer NME 10 Goal Mask with Certified Titanium Oval Wire and the Bauer RP NME Ti Titanium Cage are being told to stop using the recalled masks and contact the company for a replacement.

Approximately 1,300 were sold in Canada from April 2013 to February 2015.

Since its initial release Health Canada has received two more reports regarding injuries, which resulted in severe injuries to the eye when the wire cage broke upon impact with the puck.

“We just want to make sure that Canadians understand the issues with these masks and that they stop using them,” said Carlie Watson, spokesperson from Health Canada.

Bauer has determined that there may be an issue with the quality of the titanium wire that is used to manufacture the cages of the three helmets. This means that players with these masks do not have adequate protection in the event the helmet comes in contact with the puck.

Specific information on the injury cases is not available from Health Canada.

“[Health Canada] wants to get the message out that we urge consumers to stop using the recalled goal masks and affect cages,” said Watson.

1. This has nothing to do with the sports my child plays.

2 this has to do with warning those who do play hockey about potential SERIOUS injuries because any reasonable parent doesnt want their or any child to suffer eye injuries.
severe injuries to the eye when the wire cage broke upon impact with the puck.

Bauer has had the recall out for a while, but in my opinion they've totally dropped the ball on this one. There should have been a flyer up in every single rink and sporting goods store in North America. The only thing I've seen about it has been online, and that is only because I belong to several goalie forums and Facebook groups. Beyond that, making cages out of titanium was stupid in the first place.
