Default Dealer Parts Mark-up on a Oil Drain Plug

Stopped by Calgary Honda to take a look at the new 1.5L Turbo CRV's.

Needed a new drain plug for my wife's 2007 Honda Fit and figured I would grab one there for convenience sake.

When they told me the price I started laughing and told him No Thanks

Any guesses on what they wanted for a drain plug and washer?

What do you consider a fair price?

Yet I need a new belt tensioner pulley and I can get that at the same dealership for the price of 3 oil drain plugs.

What am I missing? International Drain Plug Shortage???

It's a bolt, with a sealing washer, about as simple as you can get, should cost a couple of bucks by rights. Dealers ought to wear masks and carry guns.

I'm guessing they must have a tiered markup system. But the parts / mechanical work is where the money is made.

Well that's a $49 part, everyone knows that.....sheesh.

If you had to build that Honda fit, from parts over the counter, it would cost about $300,000.....

What they want for a chipped key is downright criminal, a person could buy a substantially more complicated 2terabyte computer hard drive for much less.

One website for your auto parts needs will cure you from the dealership (save perhaps for keys ), rockauto.com

Prob ss and washer is crushable plus 50% markup so my guess would be 34 bucks.

That is hilarious.
Can get from Rock Auto for 85 cents apiece includes washer in multiples of 5

Honda only about 2000% more

Yet Idler pulley only 200% more at Honda

Trick is to buy the chipped key blanks on the net. Some you can just have cut and program yourself, others need a lock smith, still a lot cheaper. Now, those new high tech keys are another story, but someone will still steal your vehicle.

The number of new vehicles being stolen is disconcerting, it's like the manufacturers aren't even trying to make them secure. It's my one consolation in driving a rusting and cluttered service van, someone might want the tools in it, but given other choices no thief would single out the vehicle as desireable

The price of parts at the stealership is borderline criminal. My battery post connections were corroded on my Dodge 1500 they aren't the normal kind they look like a marine type. The 14 year old at Canuck tire has never seen anything like them before so off to Dodge dealer.

These are just the post connections no wires involved

Positive $23.68 + .35 for the nut
Negative $21.56 + .27 for the nut
$45.86 + GST = $48.51

No doubt made by Mexican children for .25 each

Just yesterday: Clutch for 1997 f250 garage cost - $340, suggested retail - $460, actual garage retail - $570, all plus tax and $125 per hour equals $1300.

Pullin my hair out and I'm pretty well bald!!!!

Price matrix, commonly used by the "big guys". The cheaper an item is the more prices are inflated.

The problem is these "big guys" keep buying up more and more dealerships. My old man has been a parts manager at a GM dealership since it opened in the 80's. Mom and pop type place, did a large volume of part sales because he had the authority to control pricing and people knew they weren't getting duped. They were bought out by an ownership group a few years back and now it is all whitewashed price policies, need to meet both unrealistic revenue and margins to get their bonuses which might happen once or twice a year. He never really loved his job, but seeing the way working for a place like this has altered his mental state is worrisome.

Close to 20 years ago I needed a bolt for the front end of my chev somewhere. Chev dealership was 15 bucks and it would take a week to get in. John Deere dealership: in stock and free. (never bought a tractor or anything from them)

Avoid the dealers.
Just a his week a friend took her VW Golf into the dealer because she had a rad leak and no interior heat.
The dealer (one of the big ones in Edmonton) quoted her $1200.
Told her to take it to my guy (Ital Motors)...$400!!
The dealers are always telling us their selling cars at their net...they can afford to on what their service departments charge.
And of course I don't believe the 'dealer net' BS.

And they are slightly more pliable than the oil pan so if bolt goes in crooked, its the bolt that needs replacing not the oil pan.
So definately not ss.

Dealerships are a ripoff but non-oem have a bit of risk.

So $17 for the OEM Honda magnetic drain-plug & washer ?

You act like it was a $50 bolt...

Dealer mark up is nuts. Had the tailgate support cable break on my chevy, dealer $110 and rockauto $37. Was a simple choice!

Who said it was magnetic?

Non-magnetic regular bolt that is 2000% more than Rock Auto.

The bolt cost more than the oil for the oil change

But if you are ok paying $17 for a bolt that has an acceptable level of profit margin in it for Rock Auto to make a living when they sell for 85 Cents then fill your boots.

We all make choices

Default millions of them

Odd that none of you fellows shop at wrecking yards. Bolts and tiny items are virtually free with a little effort.

If you don't have a little larceny in you, buy something and they'll never notice.

If you do have a little larceny in you try to avoid a wrecking yard owned by the Angels.

I sell a drain plug with washer for $4.95 in my store in Edmonton. Washer alone is $1.29.

I would dispute John Deere dealership as having reasonable pricing.3 years ago I broke a 4ft shaft on my 5ft 3pt hitch JD rototiller. JD wanted $ 1,050. I took the old one to a local machine shop and they made me a new one for $ 150. Which is still working perfectly.
