Not an old wives tale actually. Talk to any chemical rep and they will tell you the same thing. Most weeds have a season that is best for a good kill. Buttercup for example needs to be sprayed now, but better yet earlier. Spray in summer and wasting time and money

Try turning them into a cash crop ($1 a lb in the grocery store) They will wither and die on their own when they have value...

Dr. Strangelawn or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dandelions

I don't bother with them much. Mostly I focus on keeping the grass healthy and the dandelions stay under control.

I like dandelion root tea. Pretty simple - pick, clean, try, toast, grind and steep.

An easy one time solution would be to pave over your lawn with cement
then all you have to do is spray it down or sweep it off.

Saves from having to seed. fertilize, mowing, and any other time consuming, day wasting, be out more fishing.

or just suck it up, enjoy it for the short period, and get on with life.

Dandelions are full of sunshine and warmth.
They are bright and sunny .
They seek the light and warmth of the sun!
They propagate and spread a golden reflection!
They radiate a sweet scent !

They are sweet and moist,

What's not to like if you are a hungry omnivore!

We haven't used chemicals on our yard in 20 years. Don't really want to kill bees or other creatures that browse our yard so I grab a 5 iron and concentrate on my golf swing while lopping off the little yellow heads.

A healthy lawn should out compete them.
I only ever get a few throughout the season.

Dethatch, fertlize, lots of water and kill as needed.

I think this is spot on. Mine only gets a small amount. I do the dethatch every couple of years, aeriate, and fertilizer.

My neighbors on one side Larry the cable guy and wife who I've seen outside two or three times a year have a field of yellow.

Lawn looks like fall pasture.
It actually looks not bad really, but some yellow in my green me no likely....
I just killex abit, nothin crazy...works for me..

Grazon!

Apply once, be selective around your trees.

Any new growth just spot spray with 50/50 Grazon and Killex.

BTW, you need to be a farmer to buy Grazon. We all know a farmer don’t we?

That Grazon sounds like some questionable stuff, "dispose of clothes that have been saturated". Seems as though you can get a chem burn from getting it on yourself.
I sprayed with roundup last fall, so far, doesn't look too bad. Fertilized this year, haven't cut yet, see if that helps a bit with new growth.

When saturated with concentrate….. wow……. Just wow.

Read some SDS sheets on household products like bleach, ammonia, gasoline, paint thinner, methyl hydrate, and compare those to Grazon…… you’ll wet your knickers.

When you say you sprayed with roundup, what do you mean?
You didn't spray the whole lawn, just the weeds because round up is non selective and kills everything including anything green around the weeds

Grazon is safe
Active ingredient is picloram
Zero mammalian toxicity
Don’t use round up
Nuke em with killex

If applied in a strong enough concentration it sure will, but if applied as per the instructions it shouldn’t, with that in mind……
When I use Grazon I do not spray within the foliage umbrella of trees, and revert to spot spraying a 50/50 mix of Grazon and Killex inside the foliage umbrella.

I use killex you hook to the garden hose. Have 3 big lots in a row and 2 jugs does it all if you move quickly. Very effective in my opinion for the cost. Pick the hottest and calmest day you can and let em have it right after mowibg and you will knock the numbers down substantially.

So far Killex has worked on my lawn. I buy the concentrate and mix it - probably a bit strong - in a proportioner on the end of a hose. No pets though. I also keep a grass whip handy to clip the yellow heads off when needed - helps with the golf swing as well. I think Killex is a systemic herbicide so it should work it’s way to the root if done in mid August/Sept. Gets a bit pricey to spray both spring and fall.

Mow your lawn, water immediately after . Supposable the water will travel down the open flower steam and rot out the root.

Pretty sure grazon is picloram/24d.

At any rate it works on dandelions and the warning about trees is worth noting. Picloram will migrate in the soil and can kill off ornamentals in such a way.

Cut grass long
Fertilize to keep lawn thick
Spot dig out dandelions
If they are numerous then a combination of spot spray killex plus a 24D weed bar does the trick… however if really bad need to do it a couple more times over the next couple weeks.
