Default Morels

We had a great weekend picking them. We picked 3 full Safeway bags full in about 3 hours.
All larger ones as well. Cannot wait to go back out again.

It surprises me that no one has said anything about the Ft. Mac area this year. Lot of people talked about how the fire would bring out the Morels

Dehydrator works great. I found that a rehydrated mushroom is much better than a thawed one.

That's what we were wondering. We've only had a few fresh ones. Air drying this bunch

Nice haul Dark. Looks like enough for a couple months of meals. If you are air drying the morels whole put a fan blowing on them too. It helps. Make sure the morels are not touching each other when drying.

Not that everything has a monetary worth but looking on the internet and at local stores a pound of dried morels is about 300 dollars in value. And there are always buyers.

I found tons of false morals this weekend. So would it be possible that the true morals would grow in the same area?

Yes. The false morels, verpas, come out first and the true morels follow.

I think that I found one of these last Friday. It was beige and it looked like brain as opposed to what a morel looks like. I think that I'll stick to black morels if I find them and leave the false morels to grow.

Here is what I think is a False Morel. We found about 6 of them.

Sorry HunterDave I did not see your link until after I posted

That looks like the one in this link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyromitra_esculenta

"Although it is still commonly parboiled before preparation, evidence suggests that even this procedure may not make Gyromitra esculenta entirely safe for consumption.[3] When consumed, the principal active agent, gyromitrin, is hydrolyzed into the toxic compound monomethylhydrazine (MMH). The toxin affects the liver, central nervous system, and sometimes the kidneys. Symptoms of poisoning involve vomiting and diarrhea several hours after consumption, followed by dizziness, lethargy and headache. Severe cases may lead to delirium, coma and death after five to seven days."

The one that I found was similar but more beige than red but it was older and the cap started to open with half the cap missing.

Starting out I'm going to stick with the black top morels I think.

I came across a crop of these last week. I've never seen them before, but I think it is a golden morel?

Test

I have to thank some of you members for the posts on this thread. I never professed to be an expert on mushrooms, but I have been picking them over 50 years. Growing up, we always knew which ones were safe to pick and eat, and as far as Verpa's vs Morel's, we grew up calling both by the same name. It's been awhile since there was a good harvest, so the question never came up. The 'True Morel's" have started flowering in some of my picking spots, and I had a chance to scout and pick a few today. Plan to make a day of it tomorrow. I would'nt even have bothered, since I have already had such a great season, but now I am going to try and get a good harvest of Morel's as well.
Also want to thank some of you for all the tips about drying. I think it is far superior to freezing.
Won't be long till the "Redtop's" (Bollettes?) start to flower.

Within a couple days. They can overlap a little bit. You can still find the odd verpa when the morels are out.
