Default Good year for Morels?

Spring is in the air and this old mans fancy turns to....Morel's. I'm hoping for a week or 2 of warm weather with maybe some rain. I have a feeling this will be a good year for the elusive Morchella. People living near Ft. Mac might have a good season. I haven't picked many the last couple seasons, though it has been bumper crop years for berries of all sorts.

May long = fiddleheads. Unfortunately, I've never had much luck finding morels. Maybe his year.

Yes, but they are too old/high. Gotta get them when they are just coming up about 3" high.

Of course they do. Every year, if I'm lucky enough to post a pic, someone mentions "false" Morels. Funny thing is, we have been eating these "false" morels for so long in AB, that I'm starting to wonder what is true and what is false. I know that Rainbow trout are more "silver" in color in BC then here in AB, but they both taste the same, delicious.
Pic deleted. Next time I'll keep the black ones segregated from the blond ones.

True Morels are hollow the entire stem to the inside top of the cap.

Where I pick I usually have lots of colour variation in a reasonably small area.

Blond and Dark

I thought that there were no poisonous mushrooms in Alberta that look similar to morels

I would never admit it on the enternet or on a forum, but both posts 9 and 10 are correct, though post 10 is more correct then 9. If either of you pick a a hat full or pail full of morels, and you think any are "suspect" or "false, I will conduct an extensive investigation as to whether they are edible or not. This may include the making of omeletes, sauces, soups, game pies or my favourite test, batterd and deep fried. Be assured that I will make comprehensive notes on all experiments conducted, and any spoor prints will remain your property.
Heck, I'll even wave my customary testing fees for an AO member. Just try to get them to me as fresh as possible. Thanks. BTP

Todays 2 hour pick.
A friend got just as many but not in the picture. Way more verpas than morels. Only 40 morels and a couple hundred verpas. A few more days should be prime for the morels. Verpas are starting to dry up already.

Thats a nice harvest Red. "Verpas" is the name I was looking for. Many people call them "false" Morels, but we have eaten them for decades with no ill effects. Quite honestly, I cannot taste any difference between them, but I ussually have them in a sauce or battered and fried or deep fried.
This year looks like it could be the best season of shrooms in 10 years, though I don't like the cold weather front we are looking at. We have the proper moisture, but some really warm days would be nice.

In the past I have eaten verpas with no problem. A person should boil them first to get rid of the toxic components. I am drying this batch.

Not sure why it doesn't work. It is a pdf file so it takes a minute to download maybe.

I went out yesterday and haven't found anything. No mushrooms at all of any kind, except for a few growing on trees, including a chaga.

I feel for you Bub. Just got back from another spot that I have had luck at before and nada. It can be very frustrating, but at least we are out in the field, and I'm sure we have another week left. Tomorrow I'm making a day of it.
I did hear about someone picking a 5 gallon pail of Morels in Elk Island Park on Sunday. I'd share my opinion on that, but don't want to derail my own thread. lol Good luck everyone. Not many pics of 2017 Morel's (verpa's included) yet.

I don't think they'll be out for a while in our area. More snow forecasted for tomorrow, sigh...

Need the heat. Got the moisture just need two of three days if 22 plus and ten plus at night. It froze last night around the city.! That ain't mushroom growing weather. I found morels but tiny and old like they started before mothers day on that 25 degree day. Ate em anyway.

Picked 3 ice cream pails on Sunday and 4.5 ice cream pails today. For some reason picking is best in the low areas, nothing in the higher areas.

Default Any chance...

I know it's a stretch but is anyone willing to share a good place to pick Morels around Sherwood Park/Fort Sask/Redwater area. My mother and I are just looking to pick a meal or 2 worth. We would even share what we pick with the owner.

We have not had any luck in the last 2 years going to public access areas.

If nothing else does anyone know a good place to buy some morels for a decent price.

PM me if you can help.

Thanks,
Emerson Cosby

Thats a very nice harvest ken. Congrats.
If I do have a decent day, I might PM you for some tips on air drying. We have always frozen the ones we don't eat
