Has anyone used a predator call for black bears?
Do they work?

just bot a special 'bear calling' predator call at xmas. hope to try it if winter ever leaves. it sounds heavyer than a regular rabbit distress.
using a short wheelbase 300wsm for fast swingin.
the instructional cd say it is pretty intense. with the best results being if you can spot and stalk then call and shoot.

yep they work almost too well
Ended up with one old sow darn near in my lap while attempting to call in a couple of problem yotes for a farmer friend. She seemed to think I sounded like lunch. Pepper seasoning with everything that day.

I have tried a regular rabbit distress call while doing photography, with mixed results. Sometimes it works like a charm. Other time they hardly seem to notice or even run for the hills.
I haven't tried the fawn distress, but it makes sense that it would work better.

When I actively hunted black bears , I used a cub call quite extensively.
The big thing to remember is that the main reasons a bear comes intoa a call like that is either it's a sow who is in a protective mode, or a boar that is looking for an easy meal - either way, it gets exiting at times!!

I have used a fawn distress half dozen times in smokin turf, no response. I havent been up to hunt bear in a couple years, I had 8 established cans and always put time aside to vacate and go calling, really wanted to pull it off. No go.

I was at a Wayne Carlton calling seminar several years back. He had a video on calling cougar and bear with one of his calls. His first comment was "Do you REALLY want to call one of these critters to you?"
The video was pretty impressive and I bought one of his calls. But I haven't been out using it yet.
I used a fawn distress to call in wolves and it should work slick for bears.
Location and timing is usually more important than the actual call when calling any game.

This is a great idea, I got a foxpro foe x-mas this year, and I will give it a go when I do my spot and stalk in May.

According to last years regs. All I could find. It is not legal to use an e caller on bear. However I did hear/read some place that this would be changed in 2011.

When I'm calling, where one of the big guys might show up, I make damn sure my back is against a tree. They make their living sneaking through the forest and I don't like surprises.

I saw some pictures of a bear some guys shot while calling elk, and it was big.If I were to try this, I would put the caller about 50 yards away, another option would be to hunt with a partner and watch each others back.

From the 2010 guide to the regulations,
It Is Unlawful to:
set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting any wildlife:
an arrow equipped with an explosive head,
a firearm that is capable of firing more than one bullet during one pressure of the trigger or a firearm that can be altered to operate as such,
a light,
a shotgun of a gauge greater than 10,
a device designed to deaden the sound of the report of a firearm,
recorded wildlife calls or sounds, or an electronically operated calling device except; 1) when hunting migratory game birds with the use of calls or sounds that mimic snow geese and the hunting does not occur with the use of decoys that mimic migratory game birds other than snow geese, or 2) using electronic calls can be used to hunt crows, magpies, coyote, red fox and wolf (using sounds that mimic these animals or rodents).
A change I'd like to see would be to allow "using sounds that mimic any distressed prey animal" or something worded like that. Or maybe just remove any definition of what sounds can be used.
Or why not just remove the whole regulation limiting the use of electronic calls.

So, an electric call is LEGAL for wolf... funny, the same call is used for bears! I guess you can go wolf hunting this weekend!
