Smile Dogpound Creek 2015

Well made it out for the first time this year. It was a tough day for sure. Low clear water made it very tough. Saw a few fish had a couple strikes. Just a heads up there is next to no snow anywhere around the river. It may be a tough summer for this little creek as it usually relies on the snow melt to bring up the water level.

Thanks for the feed back, was thinking to hit dog pound yesterday but changed our mind in the morning... Went to elsewhere in the prairie, noticed same thing... Low clear water, had no luck

Yeah a lot of the "deep" holes out there really aren't that deep. Not looking good unless we get a lot of run off from the foothills

Default Dogpound

I tried the Dogpound as well yesterday with similar results: saw some fish, but couldn't catch any. In case anyone else is wondering, the fallen timber and burnt timber still have a lot of ice. The RDR is also low and didn't produce for us yesterday.

I was out on opening day. Water is low and clear as mentioned. Was eye opening to see how far the under cut banks really go. Found fish behind structure. With the wind noodling might have been a more successful tactic.

Is that not brown trout?? Never heard of there being cutthroat trout in the dogpound??

I was out there for the afternoon 2 days ago. I couldn't believe how low and clear the water was. Like said above, the deep holes didn't seam that deep. I managed about 6 brook trout, all on a olive bugger. Sure hope the water levels increase with the run off, or it may get scary low.

Beauty fish. After going through my fishing journals. Last weekend was the earliest I have ever been out on the dog pound. I'll give it a couple more weeks before I get back out there.

Reading this thread motivated me to get off my butt to go and fish this body of water. When I got to the access point of the the creek I wanted to fish I came upon a dreadful sigh. Another vehicle parked at the site I wanted to fish. The nerve of those people and here I thought I had made a reservation. (sarcasm) With 40 mins of driving time under my belt and little time to fish before sunset, I didn't particularly feel like finding a new spot. I ended up taking a gamble and going down stream. If I were first at the site, I probably would have preferred going upstream with the low clear water but obviously the other anglers had first dibs.

Anyways, I ended up catching my first brown of the year in a deep pool I stumbled upon downstream.

I guess I chose correctly to go downstream, as I didn't see the other anglers until sunset.

Really?
My apologies SpinN, your trolling just gets a little tiresome sometimes.

Made a quick stop in at Bottrel last night on the way home from fishin another central AB brown trout stream. I was shocked to see what the beavers have done, dozens and dozens of huge old trees all fallen everywhere ..... has the stream running over land for a few hundred meters 3 feet above the original channel .... total mess saw a couple 14 inchers darting for cover at one of the main blockages no takers in the 45 minutes I spent hopping trees and branches and broken barbed wire.

Definitely a cutie, there's nothing wrong with a little brown to keep the skunk off. Great job!

wow that's a mess,,, beaver ponds are quite a disturbance to the fish habitat which can affect fishing sometimes. Where about did you you see this, campgound, bridge?

Must say, of the three browns I have caught in the dp, they have all been the most colorful browns I've seen yet.

I have to agree. Come to think of it the browns in Alberta seem to have a real butter colour to them as opposed to Minnesota where I grew up

from somewhere i learnt that red deer river drainage browns are of the german strain brought here many years back. quite interesting to know, browns aren't native to canada

The Browns in the red deer downstream of the dam actually came from the bow river a bunch of years ago. 1000 fished never sexed just dumped in. Then it turned into one of the best dry fly trout rivers in western Canada. But thanks to our top notch esrd there aren't a whole lot of browns left in the red deer. Sry to derail just replying to the above post.

Default Bow River Brown

I was thinking the same thing about the differences in Brown trout coloration when my buddy caught this brown on the bow last week. No Red at all...
