Good job. I checked my stuff today and got one tote and 13 rats. The snow kind of messed up my snares and a lot of them had snow right up and covering the bottom of the snares not to mention some were iced up as well. I might pull them all tomorrow and reboot later on once the weather calms down a bit.

From Sturgeon Lake South. Starts right at my door step. Pretty handy not having to load up and haul the sled around. First trap is just a couple miles from my house.

That is great. Sure cleaning up the rats. The otters took care of most of the rats on my line. Saw 7 otters in one lake and 5 in another.

This grizzled old male fisher weighed over 13lb.
Nicely filled a commercial fox board.
No, I seldom use poles for fisher... too many refusals.

Note grouse coming in to thank me for getting another fisher!

That's some impressive Marten trapping right there. I only get about 36 a year on my line. Was the previous owner trapping Marten or do you think the population is just that high ?

I am trapping mostly the south end which has had very little pressure. The North end was trapped every year a fair bit.

Be careful not to take too many Runningbear. We have found that our personal limit on our line which is approx. 1 twp. is about 21 marten. Any more than that and we have over harvested. Happy trapping.

Default Winter sets

Well, back from hunting....also managed a trapping a few critters on some private land while chasing Elk. Good to see everyone doing so well. Brian amazes me every time he posts a picture. I wish we had Marten like that in the East, pretty tough to come by here. Time to set some home ground this week!

Happy Trapping, Spruce

Coyotes that I skinned this week are all good now. Fur looking good and white skin
Just got permission on a lake that has about 100 rat houses on it. Got about 80 now 35 yotes, 1 weasel and about a dozen beavers. Might stop the yote snaring for a while now with this snow now. It is a ton of work keeping up for the lat few weeks.

Not a bad question, it's a nice supplement for me. Not a whole lot of money, but cover all exspense's and then some for doing something i enjoy.

x2
some people golf and others trap. If on the good years you can pay your expenses and have some left over for the down years. That is all my partner and shoot for. Our line is not that big but it sure a lot of fun to get. Great hobby but would not like to try to make a living at it off our line.

Default Back from the line

Went out for couple days to set up and clear some trails. Not much snow out there and the muskeg was brutal rough. Got to our cabin to find a window ripped out and a bit of a mess inside. Found some hair stuck to a log, Wolverine looks to be the guilty one.

Trails were in rough shape, brush had really grown up over summer. i bought a brush cutter with a blade, really puts a hurtin on them willows.
Cut some new trail as well, be a bit of a project....

Got up a bunch of marten sets, need alot of snow before next check as it's just to rough on machines, 32km to the start of the line.....

We don't have much snow in the north east yet. Some nice cold weather though so I hope the mighty athabasca freezes up soon as I'd like to get to my line

Hey Jim, could you post a pic of your brush cutter? Most of my access is overgrown as well. I am trying to use the argo to smash it down.

Looks great Spruce. I snagged 4 more yotes today and a weasel. Pulled my snares for a bit. I need better tires on the truck to get through the snow now. Bought a new truck and the ones it comes with suck. Getting stuck in the fields is not fun and the snow isn't even deep lol

Default Beaver

Its not as big as it looks, it just has a stack of mediums on it. It was a 2XL, above average, but not huge. Here is a picture of a couple huge ones....breeding pair from some land I was trapping for damage control. They are both in the 60-65 lb class, XXXL's for sure.

It's just a Husqvarna brush saw, with an 8" blade. Check them out on the husky website. Alot like a trimmer, but built heavier and uses a harness. Can cut all day and not get a sore back.
Works great for trail widening, you can reach up over your head to cut leaners and never step off the trail, just swing side to side.

We have used Argo's to walk down brush, but seems like it standing back up.
