Whitetail Buck Down
After three years of getting photos of this guy I finally put an arrow through him. The first year 2009 he was a little small so I passed on him several times during that season. The 2010 season he put on alot more inches and was number 1 on my hit list. He was patterned perfectly in early september almost every evening he would come in front of my camera in good shooting light. September 20th roughly I sat and he never came so I proceeded to check my camera only to find that some time the day before he broke every off his non-typical side except for his main beam and g2. I was shocked I could not believe that he could break that off that early in the season. Last winter was a tough one but I believed he would make it through he had a tremendous food source next to where he lived. My first pictures of him this year were in late august, it looked as though he lost a few inches on the non-typical point but he gained in mass. He was still a shooter. Last friday I had some time during the harvest so I went to sit in my stand. Unfortunately I got there a half hour later than i would have liked and there was 8 does and fawns already in the field. I was going to leave but I thought the does would probably run to the other side of the field into a different bush as to where I thought the buck was bedded. Wrong again they ran directly into the wrong bush and to boot the entered the trees right where I walk in to my tree stand. At this point it was to far to turn back I had the itch to hunt now. I continued to the treeline and entered the bush. Once I was in about 30 yards it sounded like I spooked a herd of elephants, there was does running every direction snortin and stompin. Again I continued on almost laughing at how badly I blew this whole situation. I arrived at my stand tied on my bow andclimbed up to the first tree peg, that is when I heard something. I looked ahead and there at 40 yards was a fawn watching me. At that point I was busted so I thought I might as well keep climbing, the whole time thinking that the fawn was probably going to be a future booner and now had me figured. I pulled up my bow with the fawn still staring at me I got settled in and within 30 seconds the fawn made his way to my tree and started to sniff my string, really cool. He walked behind my stand and started to bleat for mom, he was probably one of the deer from the earlier stampede. Two minutes later I heard a deer walking to my right and I am thinking here comes the doe. To my surprise it was a buck but not any buck it was the buck. He walked right by the trail I was set up for and at 21 yards I put a slick trick in. The shot was probably the best shot I have made ever double lung and top of the heart, he ran 23 yards and tipped and just like that it was all over. Now I look back and it is kind of sad in a way, I finished my 3 year mission, and now it is time to find another. I rough green scored this deer at 163 gross
