Default Understanding gas prices

Can someone in the retail fuel business explain to me how or why prices fluctuate 6 cents overnight and back down again come the drive home?I drive into Edmonton everyday and in the morning gas is 98.9 and then 92.5 leaving at the Petro can on Gateway. This happens everyday. If they just left it lower wouldnt this generate more business? Also if our oil is so dramatically low in price per barrel why on earth are we paying 90 plus per litre?Somebody is really making good earnings-and im tired of hearing that the price is all tax.Any educated info would be welcomed.

Yet another rant about non-existing correlation between the price per barrel of crude and the price per litre for gas at the pump...
If we were enclosed system that produced/refine/sell our own oil/finished products it would be legit question.

Don't even attempt to try to understand it, I don't think the powers that be understand it. How the price can change 3 times in 24hrs is a mystery, but, us Pee-ons will never know the story behind it. Especially when they din't even fill the tanks the day before or after.

The price of gas at the pump starts with the base cost, and then marketing takes hold. How much do you think we can get today? Oh, George down the street has gas 6 cents lower.
In a free market economy, the integrated oil companies have to absorb all their costs from exploration to the pump, and the price of Canadian oil is less than the cost of production. Cheap oil only helps a refiner who does not have the cost of getting it out of the ground these days.
It is not a good time to be in the oil business in Canada.

Gas made in Alberta refineries is 1.85 a gallon in Montana, here it is $4 a gallon, and no taxes and exchange do not account for the difference.

One thing that really boggled my giblets when it came to gas prices is how stable they were when I was in Vernon for 10 days a summer ago. Didn't change once when I was there, and locals said the price has been the same for weeks now and that it's uncommon for it to fluctuate multiple times a week, never mind multiple times a day like we see here constantly in Alberta.

I believe that was an ironic double entendre.

Are you sure? The average price of gas in Montana is not $1.85. According to GasBuddy, the price of gas in Billings hasn't been below $2.29 in the last 18 months, and it's currently around $2.76/gal USD. That's equivalent to $3.65/gal CAD.

I just filled up at $0.939/L CAD (and a couple Costco's round here have gas at $0.899). That's equivalent to $3.55/gal CAD.

Currently cheaper to buy gas here than Montana, lol

Your right, the NW U.S. is getting screwed now too. Here is the link to the heat map for gas prices, further South and East you get into the lower prices, much lower.

I'd double check your math...While your point is made, the numbers are slightly off. If you use 3.8:1 conversion at 0.939/L CAD is $3.568 and Gad Buddy is showing 2.759/GAL USD in Billings and the currency conversion comes to $3.695 CAD.

Yes gas may be cheaper right now, but my milk is only 2.88$ gallon lol

Hummm. I was in Montana about 3 weeks ago. Paid $2.98 U.S. per U.S. gallon. That translates to approximately $3.90 Canadian. I'll take a little leeway and say there are 4 liters per one U.S. gallon. ( it's real close) Just before departing to Montana I paid $1.05 Canadian per liter. That's about about $4.20 Canadian per U.S. gallon. I see on gas buddy, Costco is 93 cents per liter this morning. Cheaper in Montana, but not a whole bunch!

Best thing that has happened in Alberta is we have Costco and Coop marketing gasoline now. They are forcing Big Oil to adjust their prices on regular basis and may now have some free market forces at play.
Them Americans have cheap gas because they buy our Western Select Oil for $14/bbl when world oil prices are $60/bbl.

Their gas is mostly cheaper because the US dollar is worth more and because their fuel is not taxed as heavily. We have a $0.06/L in just carbon taxes, which on its own equates to about $0.23/gal.

Default Google it Son!

I am in the retail fuel business, and have worked in the wholesale as well, and so with that statement my Credibility on this topic is 0.

Google “Fuel pricing explained” and you will find explainations from corporations that to the disbelief of almost everyone are quite accurate.

It's funny isn't it? We ran a bulk gas station for closer to 3 decades than 2, but people living in apartments that don't own vehicles know more about fuel than people that have been in the business. First hand knowledge means nothing online apparently.

Gas in Edson yesterday was 114.9 bought in Sherwood Park on Thursday at 89.9. That’s a 25 cent difference and on a B-train load of fuel of 60,000 litres, in dollars that’s a retail difference of $15,000 for that ONE load. Trucking company gets idk 7-800 bucks running that fuel to Edson?

Makes perfect sense to me!!

Man are we getting up the wahzoo!!

Refineries in Edmonton are hidden out of plain site.

Doing the math it costs between 1-2 cents/liter to haul fuel to Edson?? Not sure what the other 30 cents a liter is but appears to be just corporate Greed!
