Default Wainwright Primitive.

This was my 5th primitive deer hunt at Wainwright but unfortunately my long time partner left the province so this hunt was on my own. Had a good time and even with the crunchy snow hunting in the bush went well. Took 2 young Mule meat bucks and finished up Friday afternoon.

As always the base did a great job of accommodating the hunters and providing a great opportunity. A few cowboys running around and some who thought they should be able to sneak out early on the briefings but most people were very respectful of each other and the Base and Fish and Wildlife personnel.

Can't wait for the next opportunity.

The whitetail pictured was shot on day 1 by a lucky hunter. Not great pictures but you have to love the character on this guy.

I've only hunted the base once - in 2016. I had an absolute blast and can't wait to get back out there.

It’s in the nw corner of the map if you hit the river valley you have gone to far. It’s in between the river and Betty lake

Get to the orientation good and early.
Most guys there will be looking for deer.
Trade some phone numbers, and you can have a lot of eyes looking for your moose.

I have flown over the base in the past in a chopper doing surveys. The most moose we saw were in the north west quarter of the camp. It’s loaded with moose. Good luck.

Seen a few deer today. Missed out on a wt buck stalk. The weather did not cooperate. Lots of snow all day.
Loved seeing the three anterless moose stacked like cord wood in the back of a sask plated subsistence hunters truck....at this rate it will be a 5 to 6 year wait for a cow tag.

You answered your own question earlier when you mentioned the subsistence hunter... unfortunate it is the way it is.

Thanks for all the PM. We managed to spot a nice dry cow after some good info. My buddy made a perfect shot at 225 yards. We went to make sure she was down and seen another. Notified my wife's friend she made it there in record time lol. 2 moose down we could drive the truck to now to find the elusive mule buck for the wife. It's been a hard first rifle. But alot ot animals were harvested last night from what I seen at check out. Good luck out there today

Its a military base. Only restriction was first season has primitive weapons only and blaze orange is required at all times, the rest is rifle. They frequently do military drills and can and will close areas of the base daily to run training these drills... The briefing tells you what areas are open and closed and general other base "news" and hunting safety success news too. You need to check in and checkout daily. Suppose you were somewhere they were testing ordinance. That wouldn't be good. Suppose you were on a stalk and broke a leg... They want to know your in and out on their base.

Id like to know what the game taken totals have been so far this year. Can someone post these please

They are listed in a separate thread, called “camp wainwright 2018 totals”

Hunted the bejeesus out of the annex during the primitive weapons season this year - 40 plus elk and even more moose.....

Saw some nice Mulies as well, no clear shots.
