Yeah I'm with cowtown guy , 260.

How about doubling at least the size to 20" ? Free handing 10" at 200 yards is challenging enuff( pretty doable , just requires some practise, but ), 9x scopes at 500 on a 10" er will be hard to see probably.

Not to mention irons

Good, as many other members who've expressed their opinions by PM, I'll be bold enough to tell you that we don't want you around here. We speak of our range results, reloading data, hunting and shooting accomplishments in a generally truthfull manner, no bull****, no crap. Your input has already been instrumental in a thread lock. Go away please, you are an ambarassment to the shooting community.

I want the CHALLENGE to be a "real challenge" but not to be so difficult that nobody tries ... if there is some consensus, I would post a new CHALLENGE thread ... with the circle being
20" ...is that more realistic? The important thing here is get some shooting done and have fun!

There is an old phrase... when you are in a hole, stop digging.

Didn't you just say you were out of here?

Good point. I would like the Challenge to be difficult, but also want to include as many potential shooters as possible. Don't want to exclude shooters with 9X scopes.
Been so much acrimony in this thread, kind of takes the fun out of it so I am now thinking we might get maximum participation at 300M ... at least until spring. Feedback?

I'm gonna head out to SPFGA tomorrow as it will be warm and I will shoot at 300m and try for some groups. Is anyone willing to come for an attempt as well?

After looking at the 100m standing off hand challenge I will be very surprised if many make the cut. This probably is the most difficult challenge 260 Rem has posted yet.

You don't want anyone around here that disagrees with you.

This was a open challenge to shoot according to the parameters set, and a classy move by the OP. Fairly straight forward. Why not encourage participation? Of all members here? It is a poor representation of shooting sports and the shooting community to discourage participation of any kind, or bully someone into a corner. Let it go. You have more than said your piece.
Let the results and posted targets, whatever they may look like, speak for themselves.

Seeing as how the 300 yard challenge was getting some attention, and the 500yard challenge, not so much, I decided to give this a go over the weekend.

I shot from the bench to adjust for elevation, and then used the 24" diameter circle. 5 shots were taken at the targets.

Three managed to find their way into the circle.

I will post up pictures of the target and rifle tonight after work.

Sounds like a great start. It would be nice to see some trying the 24" target but I expect not many as most recreational shooters are hard pressed to find distances beyond 300.

Assuming that is a 45-70, I completely understand you needed to wait a couple of days to post, to give the bullets time to arrive at 500 yds . But, seriously, that is darned good even off the bench for that rig. Nice shooting.

Thanks guys!

The rifle is a Model 94 in 38-55, with a bit of work done to it...

What is even more amazing is if you use an extremely long 200 yard zero for a 38-55, the standard 255gr flat nosed bullet and a ripping 1600ft/second, the shooter would have to be aiming roughly 185" or 15.5 feet above the target. It would also be interesting to see if any of that target is left unobscured by the front blade of the sight.

A 500 yard zero was used. Front globe sight as well, so no blade...

The more I look into this 38-55 tack driver the more amazed I get! This bullet goes transonic at 265 yards! I cannot believe that maintain stabilized flight for the remaining 245 yards and none have keyholed through the target!
