What was the last year that a diesel engine got good mileage
Thinking of buying a used truck for work. The hemi is costing me a a small fortune a day to run, 65-75L a day average 300km round trip with very little idle time, but with the winter coming idle time will be a lot higher. What was the last year a diesel got good mileage? Not interested in buying a used 6.0L Ford either

2012 f350 6.7
Not kidding, great mileage.
Other than that, 2000 f350 7.3 with hyperteck and 5" exhaust, the old 5.9 cummins had a few good ones, heard of 27mpg granny driving

Unless the diesel will be free you will probably be better off just putting fuel in the hemi or driving a smaller suv or car. If you need the truck for work you could always leave it closer to your work site and commute to it or possibly find someone who travels the same direction everyday and trade days driving.
The older 5.9L 12 valve dodges were the best for reliability and mileage the 24 valve had a few issues but I think the aftermarket has made up for them now. The 6.5 chev were good on fuel but have lots of problems and I have heard the ford 7.3l powerstokes are very reliable as well. The only issue with most of the trucks availible will be body condition high kms and trashed front ends and anything low mileage most of the guys will know what they have and the price will reflect it. There may be better deals if you could live with a rwd as the price is quite a bit lower. Diesel trucks are also more costly to fix and come with there own set of winter issues (starting in cold temps and fuel issues).

I get 23mpg with my '03 dodge regularily. No mods just a TST programmer and monitor to increase the power on the fly as i need it. I aslo run Amsoil in everything. My '96 would get 28 mpg with tons of mods.

Last 3 trucks. 2008 ford, 2007 ford, 2005 chev. All three of these diesles get terrible mileage in my opinion. So I cant answere your question. I have been told that any dodge between 2004 and 2008.

I have an 06 dodge... mileage is NOT what my old 12V was...
At times the 12V got me over 30mpg (measured - Ontario where the fines were what I considered OMFG at that time so was travelling near the posted limit of 80km/h). The new truck will get me around 20mpg if I baby it.

My old 97 f350 crewcab with the 7.3, 400,000 kms still does 25 to 26mpg empty. That being said my friend with an Excursion, 6.0l gets above 20mpg, he has done a few upgrades and deletes plus run a programmer. As Ken said, my friends 2011 f350 gets very good milage as well with the diesel.

I have a 2010 Ram 3500 diesel with 45,000 km's, 3.73 rear end and no modifications. I get 15 mpg loaded (12,000 pound trailer) and 20-22 mpg empty on the highway. Highway mileage seems to vary depending on whether a DPF regen is going on or not. Usually do 105 km/hr or so on highway.

My 99 24V Cummins gets 22 hwy winter, 25 summer. Pulling the 26.5' fifth wheel and its down to 14. OK power stock, but nothing special. If I play with the 85hp Blue Chip dial, power goes up, fuel guage goes down, lol.

So, after a little looking around on kijiji, I noticed something. People want a lot of money for trucks. One was a 1999 dodge, with almost 400,000km for $24,900. I can buy a new 1/2 ton for that. the ones with low km were 30,000 or more for around the same year.

that price is ridiculous, i bought a 2005 cummins slt last year with 175k for 22k. looking around at dealerships for trade ins might be a good idea as that is where i found mine after looking for 6 months at private sales and not being able to find the truck i wanted. also if your going to buy a used truck try to find one thats only been run stock, lots of guys running mods without doing the proper leg work to find out what they need to know about what they're actually doing to their trucks

For the Duramax the 2007.5 to 2010 are the ones that are hard on fuel. The 2011+ that went to urea get quite a bit better mileage. My 2011 isn't as good as my 2005 was but it is a trade off as the 2011+ is a better package and better then any previous duramax.
If the 2007.5 to 2010 is off warranty you can pull the DPF put an EFI live to bypass the computer and have a great truck.

Haha that was great.
I have an 08 cummins that averages 18-22mpg. I know a fella that has the same truck but removed the exhaust filters and put a low end programmer in and he's getting between 22-25mpg on average now and says it pulls like a SOB now.

I have a 2004.5 dodge 1 ton with single rear wheels with more mods than you can shake a stick at (It will pull whatever you want off whatever you wish...LMAO). I pull anywhere from 22 - 26mpg depending on the program I have it set on. I also have the 6 speed stick, which makes a huge difference.

X2 I can only comment on the Fords. Go 7.3 or the new 6.7 and skip anything in between. The 6.0s were miserable for maintenance and the 6.4's were even bigger duds.

I've had dodges and I've had Fords as welding trucks, all that I can say positive about the dodges is that they have the cummins. Powertrain would fall apart, had to replace the front ends...
And no I didn't drive my trucks like a moron, I simply had them carrying around 4000lbs+ on the back which was within their capacity given airbags and dualie..
What I can say about Fords, their engine is good enough, good enough that this year I am buying yet another Ford, because I know that I will be able to get 3 years and 150,000KM out of it before it falls apart in the oilsands.
If you get a truck and you plan on taking it anywhere that isn't paved with any sort of load on it get something that will last.
Hint: there's a reason why most major companies pick Ford as their fleet vehicle of choice and its not just because of the price...

What sort of things did they do when they custom tuned it? Who did it for you? That sounds like something i'd be very interested in for my 08.
