Opinions on the 338-06
I have a chance to add a 338-06 from someone who has had one in the safe for years, but dont really know much about the cartridge. It seems like it is a handloaders cartridge? All round for deer, moose and bear?
Would like to hear from 338-06 shooters who can share their experience with the round.... Thx

I shoot one built off a sako AV action. Its one of my favorite rounds. mild recoil and a decent velocity. I shoot a 225gr accubond at 2670fps. It's my moose/elk gun. I am happy with the decision.

Buy it and give it a try. You will have no problem selling it if you don’t like it.

Another yes vote. Near the performance of the 338 Win mag with no where near the kick. Great round in a lighter style gun as is the 338 Federal. Strangely the Federal has become very popular in Europe, makes a great suppressed round for heavy game, but it hasn't caught on near as well here.

I have one coming soon from Cooper. Choose it with a 22" barrel for a closer range "Bush gun" for mainly elk and moose, but will use on deer. I have a 280ai so it seemed like a good step up from it.
Good bullet selection, most bullet weights start where the .284 stop. Im looking forward the getting it in my hands. I think Im going to start loading around the 210 gr mark, hoping the Partion's like my gun.

338-06
Love mine! Rem 700 w/ 22” Krieger barrel, HS stock and mag kit. Bought it for Africa and then never went. I run Norma brass with 210 ttsx Bullets and as said it is mild to shoot, hits real hard and has become my favourite grab one rifle. Taken 2 coyotes with one shot and a running WT buck that folded and skidded to a stop on impact. Cannot day enough good things about bullet selection, BC and shoot ability

I sure like mine. Nosler 210 partition and 225 Accubonds make it like a 30-06 on Steroids. Pleasant to shoot as well.

I've never owned one but often think about picking one up. Hard choice between the 35 Whelan or 338-06. I do have a 338 Rcm and it's a hammer. 338 fed is also a neat round.

I have one built on a rem 700 action and benchmark barrel #4 contour. Shoots very well with 210 partitions and ttsx as well as 225 accubonds.
Love this cartridge and rifle!
Only downside is the brass headstamp as I resize brass from Lapua 30-06 brass. I think you can get Weatherby 338-06 brass but it was very pricey last time I looked.
I don't have a 30-06 so it's no problem for me.

I have a 338 RCM aswell. Smacks pretty good. Very similar numbers to the 338-06. Kinda in between 338-06 and 338 win mag. But in a short action
whats your go to round?

I run Hornady 200gn SSTs. I run them through a m77 LH with iron sites. This is my bush rifle, and is very handy. When I run out of 200gn I will be moving up to a 225gn of some sort. It's too bad the RCMs didn't catch on. I have a couple 300 RCMs and they are great rifles/cartridges.

I like the 225 interbond. I keep all my brass and will eventually load for the RCM. I think a 210 Nosler would be a great round for the 338-06 and 338rcm.

I built the AI version off a Sako m75 Greywolf. Love it!!
I built mine to shoot 225gr bullets (Accubonds and TTSXs), as I live the way my 300WM shoots 180 gr bullets.
But a 185 TTSX in the 338-06 would be a sweet combo for all big game.
