Default Primer fires while removing bullet

So I was loading up some 17Hornet rounds the other day, and, I forgot to charge a bullet with powder and pressed the bullet in. I immediately realized my mistake, and confirmed that by comparing the weights of already loaded rounds with my empty round. Then I put the empty round into an inertia bullet remover so I could charge the round with the powder charge. With a 20 grain bullet you really have to pound that thing hard and on about the 6th or 7th whammy, the primer exploded. I saw a small flash, and a fairly small crack sound. No harm done, the primer just bounced off a couple walls after narrowly missing my head.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, GUYS N GALS

I detest kinetic bullet pullers!
I have used an RCBS collet puller for a great many years with no issues .

Inertia pullers are a bad idea all round. I have never heard of any accidents using collet or plier type pullers. I have heard of lots using inertia pullers. Go get a proper Hornady collet puller and toss the inertia in the used sale bin.

One of the reasons I bought an RCBS bullet puller WAY easier and nothing goes bang.

these pullers are great!! i use them for drifting sights, tapping out roll pins in triggers, checking reflexes, etc.
every time i ever tried to use one for it's intended purpose, it was a fail.

Same here, I refuse to use kinetic bullet pullers.

I have an RCBS collet puller and it works well.
However, for certain applications, for example, removing round nose lead bullets from 38 Spl or 45 ACP, I imagine that a kinetic puller is the only option.
Is there another way?

Most Forster collets are straight bored for rifle bullets, but they also make .358 & .452 collets with tapered & serrated ID designed for pistol bullets.
They also make a .400 collet for 40 S&W which I suspect has a tapered & serrated ID.
The serrations can/will mark a lead boolit, depending on lead hardness and collet tightness.
Their .357 and .458 collets are straight bored for rifle bullets.

There are several reported incidents of unintended ignition using inertial pullers,
at least some of which were attributed to improper use of standard press shell holders, rather than the correct 3 section shell collet.

Good Luck, YMMV.

Always seemed like awkward way to pull a bullet to this cowboy, then you have to deal with the components as well. Can't beat a collet.
