Default matted coyote fur

Caught a ugly coyote today with matted fur all over its back. it starts at the neck and goes to the rump. Its like the fur is all glued together. I've seen tree sap in fur and this is nothing like it. Has anyone seen anything like it? can the fur be salvaged?

Could it be a bunch of burs?
Lice can also do that.
Imo it's the latter.

definitely not burs. its as if its whole back from the neck to the rump is one solid chunk... if that makes sense. looks like the lice problem to me but i've never seen fur matted like this!

Yes, I've caught ones like that and I dispose of them, not worth putting up and NAFA doesn't want them. I'm pretty sure that it's mange. The loss of the guard hair causes the underfur to get matted because there's nothing to protect it. It sucks but there's no point in doing anything with that one IMO. At least you saved it from a horrible death if it is mange.

yah it was a little extra smelly.

doesn't look like typical mange. the tail is still in good shape.

If it stank than mange is a whole lot more likely.
I wouldn't attempt to put it up no matter what it is.
Throw it out, and be happy it's not going to die from the elements.

shot one today. I would describe it exactly the same. Heavily matted from the half way point of the back to the rump. Not rubbed to the skin like others with mange I've gotten. And like yours the tail looks good. I was about to start skinning it when I first noticed the matted fur. I put the knife away and the yote back I. The box of the truck.
