Exactly the cartridge I was hoping someone would make but from two companies I will never buy another gun from. This new round addresses the main problem with the .270wsm and allows for heavy for caliber bullets to be used at moderate velocities and recoil for excellent performance down range. I’ve always wanted a Commerical 6.8mm offering like this.

Exactly...
with such good bullets out there the 270 WSM and 6.5 PRC will do the same at normal hunting ranges.
It seems everyone wants to be Kyle the sniper now.

Just another cartridge on the market so the gun nuts buy another rifle.

Ron Spomer has a 20 minute video out on it comparing it to the 6.5 prc and 300 win mag etc on youtube.

Default Sounds like a great cartridge

Well, I did a bunch of reading on it and sounds like it would be a terrific cartridge, especially for a first big-game gun for a hunter with experience. Let me explain. I've got three big game rifles (300 Win Mag, 270 Win, and 25-06) and take my preference depending on what I'm hunting. My 20-something son then chooses from the remaining 2. He's hunted with me for several years and taken game, so he know what he is doing.

When he can afford his first rifle, I'm thinking a 6.8 Western would be a great choice. Its got better down range energy and ballistics than the 270 WSM and a variety of bullet weights to chose from, and works well on all the big game animals we'd be hunting in Alberta.

Sure it will be able to long range well if it's accurate but those 175's will penetrate very deeply and should be the first modern choice that rivals the old 6.5x55 Swede running 160 round noses for SD. The 175's go .326 and the swede's 160's go .328. The 175's being more modern in shape will have higher bc and it's range will be far extended beyond the 6.5x55's capabilities but it's also launched a like 350 fps faster as well. So it's almost likely looking at a 6.5x55 formula with a 21's century touch.

At first i'm very suspicious that winchester has the brains to get it right lately, the last big hit imo was the .270 wsm and i do like that one quite a bit and as mentioned it will show well against this and the PRC at even out to 600 yards no sweat. But i cannot ignore that .326 sd on those 175's....if you use a delayed controlled expansion tough bullet, it will 'end to end' some very thick critters within quite the distance windows. So it has numbers not to be ignored imo.

Even though it's a tough market they jumped into...they may have found the right direction with this one and big game hunters that want a very dynamic range of performance potentials.

Unneeded, unnecessary and doomed to a short life.

It really is a better designed case that was made to maximize the performance of the new high bc long bullets.

If you were choosing between a new 270 wsm or a 6.8 western
The western would be the better choice

As with most new cartridge's these days it just splits hairs with what's already available, but hey it keeps the shooting community interested, just like the golf club manufacturers, ever 6 months a new driver that gives you another 2 yards and is straighter by 1% marketing hype.
