Default Looking for rebarrel

Hey all. New to the forum. So far lots of great information. My father-in-law is looking for someone near enough to edmonton (we are in whitecourt) to rebarrel a mauser 98 in 358 norma. This is what is in currently but will not group at all. Any idea of who may do this and approx cost to expect would be appreciated. TIA

Yup, in Edmonton I’d start with KS Arms.
But on a Mauser action, I’d also consider Jennings in Pritchard BC based on a recommendation (not my own experience)
Was going to send a Brno his way before I sold the rifle.
Prices are reasonable and he was highly recommended for Mauser action projects specifically.

I'm re barreling my 300 weatherby and have made arrangements with Rob Galloway. I was called by Bob Jury that my barrel was complete and he would ship it to Rob asap. This will be the 4th barrel on this action. The barrel I am having replaced is a RKS gain twist and was installed by KSA. It was ok, but not the best I have had.

Jmo,

Norm

Before you decide to rebarrel, have him check the barrel condition. It may be something cheaper and quicker. Unless you know it’s already got 4000 rounds down it or something.

I agree with the above. Have it checked before you spend that kind of money on it. If you have a chance clean it first with something like "wipe out ".

I have had several barrels installed by RJC Machine in Grande Prairie.

Are there any gunsmiths who support this page ?

Before you spend a lot of money,

Have you checked over everything else: action and stock degreased, action screws torqued properly, scope mounts and rings tight, eliminated any issues with the scope itself? Have you had another shooter try the rifle?

Mauser actions benefit greatly by being Devcon Bedded to their stocks. It is very common to find cracks at the tang or behind the recoil lug or magazine cut in them and they shoot very poorly if there is any movement of the action in the stock. I have taken quite a few from 4" to under 1 MOA by simply bedding them.

Before you throw the baby out with the bath water check one thing. If your barrel is free floated introduce some pressure under the barrel just behind the fore end tip, I suggest some stiff card paper folded over a couple times or what ever thickness is required to dampen the whip when the rifle is fired. You will need to pull the barreled action from the stock to make sure you have even contact where the barrel cradles in the channel. It's worth a try. D.H.

It’s doubtful the barrel is shot out.
1/ examine barrel carefully. Often at crown or 1/4 inch from muzzle barrels get damaged.
2 / check screws on bases , rings ,stock.
3/ scope may be pouched , try another scope if possible .
4/ bedding may need to be revamped .

My guess is the crown / muzzle is damaged

And in case the OP doesn't know, David Henry is as good of a gunsmith as any other in Alberta. You won't go wrong sending your rifle to him.

I haven't seen his work, but I believe fps plus is also a gunsmith and if his work is good enough for Cat (see the AO rifle build thread), it's good enough for me.

Default Carbon Ring?

Hasn’t been mentioned here yet, but what about there being a carbon ring? Lots of info on that if you Google ‘carbon ring in rifle barrel.’ I’ve only ever read about it, and that’s all I know about it. I’m waiting to get my borescope to check some of my suspect rifles that are giving me grief. I’m sure a lot of you here can fill in some gaps on this topic.

May not be cheaper to fix or replace but maybe it is the scope it self. Do you have a spare scope you could try on the rifle. Another thing to try would be clean the barrel with Wipe Out. That stuff really cleans a barrel clean. Last but not least let some you know who can shoot magnum rifles well shoot it too. This is not meant to be mean just some times we get a flinch with out knowing it.

If you are near Edmonton, KS Arms would be a great choice I highly recommend them.
