Default What sand paper to open a stock barrel channel

I will be getting my stock from Boydes sometime soon and need to open the sporting barrel channel to a varmint barrel channel. Am thinking about a 20 or 40 grit emery cloth. Am I on the right track? I want something that will open the channel fairly fast and have the paper last a while. No I don't have channel opening tools, this will probably be the only time I do this.

A laminated wood stock will take a bit longer to open up than a straight wood stock, I normally use 60 to 80 grit first.
The most import thing to remember think is to not open the channel too wide or unevenly .
Several different widths of dowel or a similar round thingy will help with this
The last one I dif I actually used a series of deep sockets to wrap the sand paper around .

20-40 grit should be fine for opening up the barrel channel if that is on hand , I don't have anything quite that coarse do have never tried it

I have used a lot of 60 grit shaping stocks, never have had 20 or 40 but see no reason they would not be just fine. Since you don't have barrel channel tools an assortment of long sockets and low grit sandpaper makes a good alternative and still pretty fast. You already know you will want to drop down in grit as you get close to finished so you can re-seal the channel well. Best of luck with the new stock.

I typically start with 60 grit to remove most of the material.

I've only done one and used what comes naturally (and readily), plumbers sand cloth. It spirals around the dowel easily and the open-mesh variety is really difficult to clog. A bit of electrical tape to secure the end and it works great. Click on the second product photo in the Home Depot link and you can see how it's open mesh somewhat resembles a screen door. Being cloth/fibre backed its also much more resistant to tearing than paper-backed abrasives.
