Yes'er, looking forward to getting things happening.
Today I was out at our farm working on my quad with tracks when a long long time Pal of many years stopped by with info that he has a coyote down in the pasture.
I jumped in with him since his barded-wire gate days ain't too friendly with him, Ha,,, sees a son of a gun when we get older he said. LOL.
He's packing his home built 22/308 cheata with a frugal priced Bushnell 3X9 that he ordered with the dots in it.
The cross-hairs at 100, the dots at 200, 400, 500, 600.
He ranged the coyote at 400 so dot 2 took care of that critter.
Had a good chat about the days we've missed and good times at the local ranges we attended.
C Ganter is this long time Pal as he filled me in on his "Free Bore" days from 1979 too 1986/7 when he shut it down. Couple competitions in Australia and New Zealand with 20 too England.
C Ganter at one time custom made about 50 rifles for the folks in Calgary back in the day, but now he builds only for him self.
We both had a good laugh as we spend our days visiting with many folks and touring around the back woods looking or Harvesting critters.
Today's TV has nothing of interest for us, so do our own thing out side as long as we can.
Always glad to share in ideas of things we can choose from in a awesome Province of Alberta BC and Saskatchewan.
Western Canada has been good to us, much of the Americas for me at least.

Didnt realise how old this thread was when I started reading it
But what caught my eye was a reference to the 22 varmint I have not heard in probably 30 years. My second rifle was a custom BRNO made by a Calgary gun smith for a neighbor who had lent me the rifle to clean up the coyote that were attacking his geese in his ponds. Rifle had a period K4 Weaver unit that was like looking through a keyhole into a bright light. The 22 Varmint was still a wildcat being a necked down 250 casing and he also gave me the original Hollywood dies which I still have marked "22 varmint". Years later it became popular as the 22-250.
Have also used the 30-06 as my primary big game rifle for many years but that 22 varmint and many other 22-250's since still get the bulk of the action each year.

I hear yha wwbird, I ain't never heard of it till today.
Shes one sweet rifle for sure.
It was a frugal build for C Ganter back in the day, but he mentioned it would be wiser too pick up a regular across the counter rifle at today's cost too custom build.

Honestly if they "reinvented" the 3006 with a new name of a metric equivlent this would be the most bragged about calibre going be ause of all the points previously listed.
All the know it alls cant brag up something that is 100 years old because it just doesnt sound appealing of all the rage.

Old tread that never gets old. I find it strange that some poo poo the 30-06 but think a 7mm mag is awesome. Both can push a 180 grain bullet approx 2800 fps. Nothing wrong with either but pushing a 180 grain bullet 2800 fps is nothing to sneeze at!!!!

Given the 30-06 remains one of most popular cartridges in America, you can hardly call it dud. There are millions out there and always will be.

ya gotta agree with that , nope ... do u still have a black and white TV ... .. the 284 will beat the 06 in every way and day .... sometimes old never goes away .. the 30-06 is not an efficient cartridge in any sense of the word ... the 06 is a DUD

That's what I used for my first big game kill, an antelope about 55 years ago. The rifle was dad's 725 Remington. If I ever have to settle for one, that's the one

You quite obviously have a very poor understanding of meaning of the word dud. There may be more efficient cartridges out there, however lack of efficiency does not equate to dud. As a hunting round the 30-06 has killed more game than the .284 ever will.

there's less diff between the 308 win and 30-06 then the 06 and the 300win mag .. The 308 and 06 is a mere 125 fps diff , some rifles vary that much ... In other words if you wanna use the .308 bullet you are better off with the short 308 win or the 300 mag ... efficient is the word and the 06 was good in its time but it's over .... the 7 rem mag walks all over the 30-06 with any grain ....

Animals haven't changed since the advent of the '06 and are no harder to kill
I doubt if the 7 mag is outselling the '06 but even if it is that doesn't mean that either is better or worse than the other

The '06 is more than sufficient for any animal I'll ever hunt, at any range I'll ever shoot. It just works.

Haha theoretical ballistics don't put game down. As for target shooting I agree, but real world evidence supports the grand ole 06 for hunting.

If hunting cartridges were judged by how long they had been around, or how many head of game they had killed, the round ball ahead of black powder would be the clear winner. Whether a cartridge has killed a million animals or one, doesn't effect how that cartridge will perform on game. I personally don't own a 30-06, and I likely never will, but that doesn't mean that I couldn't kill game with it , if I had to.

As I mentioned in the forward posts that I've had a few of the normal cartrages over the years, and the old school 30/06 has been part of the mix.
It ain't the best nor the worst as it fits in along the middle line "some-what" lets say, Ha.
No need to call out its out-standing track record of game harvest, or its ability to work at long range shooting as it has racked up some pretty nice winning ribbons and trophies over the many years.
Old 06 is bland too some, but it fills the gap in the last target plinking and critter harvests for me.
Kind of a fun plate forum too work with too.
Don at having good times where ever I end up.

I never did "return" to the '06 simply because I've never had one before. But when a nice Browning B78 chambered in '06 was available to me, I did not refuse it due to caliber. My first year out with it, I harvested a mulie buck and assisted my SIL in finishing off his doe. Both were fairly extended distances.
But tell me this : if most here truly submit to the claims that they keep their shooting within that magical 500 yard window, how is a 30-06 launching a good stout 165 gr. projectile, placed on mark less than very capable?

I've heard the 30-06 called a lot of things but never a dud, and some 30 cal bullets have very high BC's!
The 30-06 is not my "go to" rifle these days but it was once and I killed a lot of game with it as did some of my friends, none of us ever felt under gunned with it.

I'm a fan!
Started by big game hunting days with the 6.5x55 surplus rifle. Work took me north, Big animals up north. And older gent (can't remember his name??) at the old Wholesale Sports on 97th and Yellowhead told me I couldn't go wrong with a 30-06.
So I walked out with a Winchester mod 70 Black Shadow. Unfortunately there's a lot of snow up north and winter tires have priority.
I pretty tried several of the popular cartridges; 303, 30-30, 308, 300WM, 7mm RM, 7mm WSM, 280 Rem, 280 AI, 243 plus the obvious ('06 & 6.5 Sw).
Not to mention my blackpowder guns. But, I have gone back to '06.
As a matter of fact I just sold a TC Encore Pro Hunter bbl in '06 and picked up a Win XPR '06 and Rem 760 Gamemaster in '06.
It's simple and it works.

I have my '06 but doubt I will really shoot it again. But I have no doubts that I will look at another one. I have a few other things in mind before I look but you never know what one will find.....

Yesterday I got my first 06, next year it will be 100 years old. It is a US MODEL 1917 Eddystone made for the US military. It has a peep sight calibrated out to 1600 yards.....lol The rifle was used in 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge, by a gentleman who is now 92 years old. I couldn't be happier to own this piece of history. ps..... I will shoot it in the next while, loaded down to 100 gr plinkers and reduced powder load. Also hoping that the gentleman who owned it will also take a shot with it.

Hahaha, check with firearms dealers for numbers of rifle and calibers sold ,
The ol dormant '06 and it's illegitimate son the .270 win are still top sellers ,

Frick!!
I forgot about that one. It's in pieces. Just needs a stock and action screws and whenever I get around to it, drilled and tapped.
Thanks for reminding me Saddleup

That's what I have as well, except mines a little more modern. And I need to put a scope on it. But it is a very accurate rifle, it just has a LOT of felt recoil. It's not a fun rifle to shoot at the range, lol.

I suspect your definition of "walks all over" must be different then most other peoples.
Taking load data from Nosler, both rifles with a 24" tube
Punched into a calculator with a 3" high at 100 yards zero
.
At 400 yards (a long shot for all but a small minority of hunters) the Rem mag takes a 1.76" advantage on wind drift and 2.35" on drop.
Yikes! Now I see what you must be carrying on about... those new fangled 7mm's sure are an improvement over that outdated, obsolete 30-06. Obviously the wind drift would favor the 7mm with a stronger cross wind but it's not enough to worry about until your shooting way out there.
In all seriousness and without getting into specialized long range rifles, cross sectional area, sectional density, etc. I think the two are fairly equal. I wouldn't sell one to buy the other and I won't be running home to sell any of my 30-06's. In fact, when you do compare the two it's no wonder the old war horse has been getting it done with class for 110 years or why the 7mm always has and will take a back seat to the everyman Springfield.
An argument like this is fairly childish. It doesn't have to be one or the other. They are both very good cartridges for most hunting. Shoot what you want but don't pretend your favorite is superior to the other.
