Try using a heavy 100% Flourocarbon leader, about 17-20lbs, it is quite abrasion resistant and works great.

Default 60lb line

I'm not sure about good or bad brands but another forum member turned me on to just using 40lb to 60lb fishing line as a leader. The idea being that most metal leaders inhibit the action of the lure. Granted this was applied to spin casting but I have used it for hard water fishing as well with no complaints.

Default Best Leaders

Buy some 75 lb. steel leader material , small rolls available at
WSS.....Mustad ball bearing swivels and snap and swivels
in that 75 lb. range and tie your own . Forget that fluor carbon
if your going to fish serious pike .......

Most pre done leaders are junk ....

I picked up a roll of 60 pound flouro leader material, sleeves and terminal gear. I was a doubter, but so far Ive caught some pike well over 10 pounds on them and not a mark on them. Im impressed. Ive also had pike break off 30 and 38 pound braid as well and watched a small pike bite through 30 pound powerpro. If you want to land the fish, use a leader. Sometimes you get lucky and dont need one as I found out, but the odds are small that you will, I just got lucky.

Default Leaders

I would go with the titanium leaders made by Finn-Tastic. Small diameter and very resistant to kinking.

For the price of a couple titanium leaders you can make at least 50, 60 pound flouro leaders with all the gear. 25 bucks for a 25 yard spool. I thought the same way you did til I tried them. Make sure you get good quality swivels and snaps not the crap that comes with packaged leaders.

I have seen way to many fluoro leaders break. Bitten right through by big pike. When I was still guiding 2 summers ago I used a single Ti leader for most of the summer untill my line broke when I cast and I lost everything, and I used it pretty much every day. Once you go Ti you will never go back.

Make your own.

Cheaper. Keeps your tackle box much tidier. And if it breaks, you only have yourself to blame
