Build your own?

Assemble one based on a metal cabinet to meet legal requirements, use location, cinderblocks and water for fire protection?

Buy used?

Convert an old fridge or freezer?

Oh wait you meant an inexpensive place to purchase, Princess Auto is pretty cheap and they have (or had the last time I was there) cheap gun safes on sale.

You don't need a cabinet to store firearms or a safe. From what I read, with a trigger lock OR locked in a container OR in a safe or room that cannot be easily broken into

Not saying that a safe isn't a good idea. Just clarifying.

Costco as others have stated. Canadian Tire also puts the Stackon safes on sale once yearly.

Scary how easily they are breached with a cordless grinder and a zip disk.
Most are only 12-14 gauge steel.
A hidden safe behind a false wall would be nice if possible.

Default Gun safe

At work we cut up to 1/2" with a grinder and Zip disk so pretty well every gun safe on the market is a false sense of security. Most have a 1" door and under 3/16 " side wall thickness. I could probably get into most safes in less than 10 minutes.

Ya, the sides are the week point.
Only need a one foot square hole.

Kijiji. You can find them on there quite regularly for $400 to $600 that likely won't get broken into, ever.

There are a lot of high end expensive safes out there. I pay lots of money every year to my insurance company and do not feel it is justified to spend huge money a safe. Having said that I do have a midrange safe that is quite adequate for my purposes. I recommend that everyone who has firearms keep a delayed record including serial numbers and pictures of everything you own in a safe place off site from your home. If you have lots of good firearms you may want to consider having an itemized rider specifying what you own and want covered included within your insurance policy.

I don't know how realistic the videos on youtube are, but there was one that showed how easy it was to break into a gun safe with just crowbars, no power tools needed. The best idea I have seen was a false wall, with an item that you would normally consider to be screwed onto it which proved to be the door and had a hidden lock, and there was a sliding gun rack built behind it. With the way the house was built, you would have had to have measured the house to realize the room dimensions were off. I prefer to have my guns locked up more than just disabled. On a side note, my neighbor had a safe at his business, and the criminal was using my neighbors cutting torch to open it, he knew the brand of safes he was cutting and where to cut, and had my neighbor not showed up during the off hours, he would have been robbed. So, don't leave any cutting tools lying nearby.

Check at your local Peavee Mart Store. They have a sale on gun safes now.

Peavey mart has them.
they had or still have a 30 gun on sale the other day and an additional 15% in wetaskiwan.
Otherwise I'd go the kijiji route often one pops up on this for sale board.
