Look for books by:

Jim McLennan
Guy Woods
Barry Mitchell

All available at the public library, I believe.

A few of my favorites are;
Fly Fishing Western Trout Streams by Jim McLennan and
Alberta's Trout Highway by Barry Mitchell.
Both offer great insight to our waters and fly-fishing in general.

If you can find it, the one book that fueled my passion to fish as a kid was "Fish and Tell and Go To Hell: Alberta Fly Fishing Wisdom". As great a read now as it was when I got it for Christmas in 1989. It's a collection of short stories, but in a time before the internet it opened my eyes to what fly fishing in Alberta could be and lead to a lifetime search for my own memories.

I also think "Trout Streams of Alberta" by the late Barry Mitchell is a good read. It goes through the anatomy of a stream, seasons, etc. Also discusses different rivers in AB, etc.

A good read IMO for the beginning and novice fly fisher.

Default Fly books for Alberta

I treasure a little book titled "The Phenological Fly" by Bob Scammell. At 63 pages, it is a quick read. Anecdotal in nature, it is packed with very practical info on fishing the major Alberta hatches. Published in 1995 by Blue Ribbon Books.

There is an old one that may not be in print any longer called "Flies for Alberta" written by Ian and Reg Denny and Roy Ramdeen.
It also includes recipes for the flies.
Someone in the Northern Lights Fly Tyers club might know where to get a copy.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't expect so much logging on this morning. Looks like I have lots of reading to do.

Thanks again!
