Default To choke or not to choke? What was the question?

To choke or not to choke? What was the question?
So I've gone out looking for rabbit these past few weekends (no success) not really doing it to catch anything, mostly getting a handle on walking around with my loaded gear in the forest and enjoying the walk, occasionally scaring the bejebus out of hikers in 406. City folk really freak out when they see me in the woods in camo on a random Saturday afternoon, makes me wonder if I'm even allowed out there (just to clarify...you know the road at McLean Creek, Range road 54A, I can hunt off that road into the woods right ?)

Anyway!! Back to my original question.

I bought a Modified Choke for the Fabarm and took it to the range. Well the shot with choke annihilated the paper target and without choke saw a few steel pellets in and around the target at about 15 yards. Should I choke? Do you choke your 12 gauge shotguns for rabbit, grouse etc? Is my pattern to loose?

I would not be firing any of my shotguns that have removable chokes, without a choke tube in the barrel, especially with steel shot. Some people will probably argue that the shot can't contact the threads, but I don't see the point of taking any chances.

Modified will be fine for rabbits !
How far away was your pattern board, and what sized shots?
As was asked, you ARE using a cylinder bore choke in there, not just a bare barrel??

I don't see the purpose of walking around the woods pretending to be a weekend warrior myself.
But, back to the original question...one shouldn't fire their shotgun with screw in choke removed, one could dent the thinner muzzle as there is no tube in there .
12 gauge and # 4 lead should take care of any was wascally wabbitt ...
Modified choke is open enough, but maybe a skeet choke for a little closer holding wabbitts.
Tight Chokes,
Rob

Pretend to be a Weekend warrior!? Don't you like hiking in the woods? Besides some of us are trying to get in shape so we can do more than 5 km before keeling over.... Also one doesn't remove chokes from barrel and shoot, one screws in the original cylinder before shooting. The fabarms screw on the outside. I don't think that's a problem is it? Maybe I'll just use lead.

Pretty odd comment, still having trouble making sense of the opening line.

I think he is referring to being fully kitted while hunting rabbits. I tend to agree. I always try to be as inconspicuous as possible while hunting.

Im not sure. Kinda took offence to be honest. All I really do is hike so I can get used to hiking with the weight of my gear. Which consists of a back pack, shotgun and a camo cover jacket. Maybe he thinks I meant I'm one of these (see pic attached of sniper in full camo). Who knows ??

I don't think use of camo will impact your rabbit hunt in any positive way. They don't care if you're a tree, moose or wolf. They'll either high tail it or sit still and hope you move on. After blasting a few bunnies you may realize a .22 will result in a lot less destroyed meat. Also, if you're not sure about where to be a local CO can help. A lot of McLean is Rec area and you will be fined.
