Default Retirement health insurance options

After 40 working years for various employers I was always covered by the company health insurance due to downsizing I was laid off. Facing a shortage of employment options in oil and gas I'm looking at early retirement and maybe working at a job part time. What are the options for health coverage?

When I quit a major oil company to go contracting on my own I contacted my existing health insurance company (Manulife). They set me up with my own plan comparable to the one that I had with the oil company. Because I was continuing coverage with them it was quite simple and cost effective.

You need to check out all of them . Most will only allow 30 days after your retirement to join a plan without a medical.

IMHO Blue Cross offers to little for the money compared to others.

We went with manulife.

Blue Cross probably the best bet for the OP. For contractors set up a private health service plan (PHSP), you can still have blue cross but your company pays for it not you with after tax dollars.. I decided to pay all health costs through the Company and not use Blue Cross. Found Blue Cross wasn't worth it for what you get, Dental is capped to low after a 2-3 year waiting period.

I found this calculator for blue cross although I think there are lots of add on's involved that's why I was considering what options were available.

We have been with Manulife since 1999 and love it.
