We were out deer hunting and came across a male ruff doing his dance in front of 8 females , all the years of hunting I never seen this before in the wild.He looked twice the size with his feathers all out doing his courtship.
We had a good feast for lunch from a different group we came across.

Pulled two spruce grouse yesterday out of a group of three. Nice to seem some out and about

Also my partner and I came face to face with this fella and had a bit of a staring contest at about 10ft for about 20seconds. He wasn’t bothered too much by us ( we were sitting in my side x side ) and eventually just turned and wandered back into the trees.

Another great day,saw about 15 birds . Trying out the cheapest shotgun they had on the rack at P&D. 20ga Revolution Arms single shot.

I have seen absolute bucket loads in my travels through 339 and 344 this fall, and out towards Grande Cache and Slave Lake while working. It just seems to be a great year in general. One to enjoy now and remember with fondness later.
Following up on a previous post, I too have found them in general to be much more skittish than I usually remember them. Good luck out there!

Yes I agree one of my go to spots I started walking down the trail and within the first 200yrds I put up 5 birds and not one of them gave me a possibility of a shot.

Besides cutting grouse in strips and pan frying in butter and garlic . Is there any other ways to make them in the field or at home ?

My wife did a couple of grouse in the instapot using this recipe and it was amazing in my opinion. One of the few ways I have had grouse where it didn’t taste dry and tough
She uses the same recipe she uses for short ribs which are also amazing.
Served with a side of mashed potatoes and whatever veggie you prefer.
Hint. For best results use Wild Turkey bourbon, other bourbons work but the Wild Turkey gives it a spiced kick that really makes a difference.

We've wrapped them in bacon and cooked them in a dutch oven in the field. Potatoes, onions, gravy all in the pot. Excellent stuff. Skewered with greek spices, oil, lemon juice, and parmesan is pretty tasty as well.
