Default Maligne lake

I am planning to fish Maligne lake the end of June and first of July. I have never fished it before. What techniques and flies and hardware should I try. I am inclined to use a fly or chironomid but my wife wants to use spoons ( five of diamonds ) or whatever will work.
Thank you.

My go-to hardware hooks for trolling for trout in new mountain lakes are a small 3 or 4 blade 'willowleaf' gang troll with a silver K5 or K7 kwikfish(Flatfish) or small rapala a tied on two to three feet behind the gangtroll. With the kwikfish, while trolling, your rod will be twitching from the lure action, so your rod tells you the right speed to troll. No twitch, too slow or too fast. A small five of diamonds len thompson spoon behind the gang troll or by it self could be worth a try too.

Or just trolling a 2 to 3 inch countdown or sub surface rapala with the brookie pattern by itself, no gang troll.

As far as flies to try I will let someone else with better knowledge post. After the drive to Jasper just check your car radiator for what insects are stuck in the rad and match the bugs or colors.

Make your first stop at On-line Sports in Jasper and they'll tell you what's hot - and what's not. For flys, a green Doc Spratley caught the biggest rainbow ever there, big double-backed shrimp patterns are always popular - stripped fast with quick jerk retrieves. Just remember - no lead permitted in the National Parks.

Just an FYI, there is a "lead" and full on "bait" ban in the parks. That includes having any within your possession (ex: in your tackle box). Jig heads, sinkers, some spinners, scented plastics, power bait, etc.
