Any life back in the Alberta oilpatch yet?
Hey guys, anyone seeing any signs of life yet in the oilpatch? Specifically with drilling? We deal with the dirt guys (roadbuilders and lease site builders) and occasionally with ratholers, but it's been quiet since January. Oil is firming but natural gas appears to be weak.
Is this spring breakup expected to last til fall? Or will we see a slow trickle of drilling/exploration start up again here right away?
Thoughts? Guesses? Predictions?

My prediction is nothing major will happen (that isn't happening/online already) until big business gets some idea of what the new gov't is up to. The NDP had best get their plans tabled ASAP as business doesn't idle long before it moves its attention elsewhere.

Plenty of companies firing up Right now we just gained 11 rigs ontop of the 14 we already work for. Calling for a fairly busy june

First quarter results were released a couple of weeks ago.... Not looking too good. I would expect another round of layoffs starting end of this month. I believe ENFORM predicts 25% manpower reduction in the Oil/Gas sector country wide.

I look at AER website daily for spud reports for AB and there isn't too much firing. Daily Oilpatch Bulletin is a good site also. You can see what wells are being licenced and spudded in AB and SK. I deal with rigs on the service side (enviro) and live near wainwright. It's slow in this area. I'm seeing a couple rigs in the area but knowing the companies it is only going to be small 5-10 well projects. Headed to kindersley at the end of the week. Couple rigs there I'm going to look after on a relief basis.
Don't think much will happen till end of summer or fall. I think companies are waiting to see where the price of oil will stabalize and stay consistent before committing money to drilling. July companies will get together their 2nd half budgets and that will be a big sign.

Remember that from the onset "they" predicted this will be a 3 - 5 year slowdown. Only 4 - 6 months into it so far. That would mean a minimum of 30 months to go. And this a world event, nothing to do with the NDP, but they'll no doubt be blamed for it because blaming real world events wouldn't be realistic would it? Not to mention the PC's coddled the producers away to long. Going to be a double whammy and a pretty big financial realignment before all is said and done me thinks.

The place i am at is doing some in house transfers before hiring more from the public, a delayed project is getting back on track.
The oil crash seems to be over, its just the dragging along the ditch part now.
There is still a big oil glut out there so how long more can be produced than is consumed before prices slump again is yet to be seen.
Oil at 60$ and wcs at 50$ is pretty expensive historically so life should be good once the contractors and service companies make the appropriate cuts

That ^ ... plus other cuts will continue to happen in various companies throughout the province, for several months to come.
I hate to say it, but I don't think the worst is over yet.

a lot depends on OPEC's June meeting.... and our new Gov't.does not have anyone exuding confidence when it comes to investing here. (oops!, might get yelled at for whining)

For me it has not slowed. We will see what happens once shut down season ends. I'm hoping NWR will carry me through the rough times, much like Shell Scottford did in 2008-2009.

Are the wells all in Saskatchewan? Or some in Alberta too?

we laid off too many people. we slowed down for a bit, now we have both units out, with another big contract starting mid june. we have guys working days off now and i was asked to work mine starting wednesday. red deer frac also wants another 6 guys on loan, but we are too busy.
i think we are hiring 5 new guys, or management is thinking about it. either way im busy until fall already

Drilling continues to slow down. Work is winding down. Budgets are shrinking.

That huge lay down field in Sturgeon Industrial Park has hardly anything.
What happened?
Did they all of a sudden get a bunch of work, which is really really good?
Or, has this equipment moved elsewhere. Not good?

Who knows. Lots of equipment has been sold at recent auctions.

I am moving one tommoro from my racksite in Drayton out to the Wolf LK Rd, racking one from the Swale rd out by Nordegg into my racksite at Rocky, and doin a skid move for Bonavista east of Rocky.
Startin a Nabors rig with walking system from Nisku up to the Weyerhauser main up in GP.. prolly a 3 day move there.. so yep this week will be good for us, next week who knows.
Bidding has been real good in the last week, I'm thinking marketing and sales for the drilling contractor are sharpening their pencils as well to get turnin to the right...

Who's the rig contractor? Probably for Twin Butte. They seem to be punching a few holes all around Provost. Talisman has a few to do closer to Chauvin.
