Default Owl Question

Last weekend when we were in the foothills west of Ft Macleod we saw What im positive was a Great Grey Owl. It was quite photogenic and not scared at all just catching mice and being an owl. I thought that they were a northern owl

Has anyone ever seen them way down south here before ?

Either a great grey or a spotted.

Great Grey owl, very common not really migratory, depends on abundance of prey mostly mice. In winter a lot of northern birds come south so you tend to see more of them in the winter. Very calm bird, sometimes seem almost tame.

Great grey. They feed almost exclusively on voles, so if your in an area with good vole populations, you will have Great greys.

Older books claim them as Boreal and confined to the northern part of the province. Very common now, even had one on the quarter just north of us. Neat bird and they are very photogenic. Less kind person would say, kind of stupid.

getting more common down south over the years, as another member stated, as long as good vole population they will stick around, for the most part they are migrators, they will continue south until food, then back north. the migration is not as long as say a snowy owl as they typically stay in boreal. Cant tell you how many hours I have in photographing these guys.

They are generally a northern species, but they go quite far South in the Rockies -- as far as Yellowstone, I think. They're quite common in the foothills W and NW of Calgary. Always cool to see, though.

This is the area in which I live. We have one of these resident on our farm. Love listening to it at night as it's calling to others. Lots of owls around here, but the big guys are the best
