Default powder scale

i have used a 505 rcbs scale for about 1500 reloads maybe more and today it just stopped working. i zero it touch the pan lightly and it will not re-zero. zero it touch the pan to get the beam to rock slightly and again it will not zero. most puzzleing is the beam never stops in the same position. is it time to look for a new scale or does someone out there no what the problem might be. thanx in advance.

Clean the pivot points with alcohol on a Q-tip and try again. Dust and grime accumulation will cause the problem you mention.

Can you see a burr or any other inconsistency , with a magnifying glass?
it IS on a solid surface, right, nothing to change to zero like a dimple in the table??
Did you use a control weight after to check?

I beleive 505 and other RCBS scales' beam sits on two glass v blocks. I had exactly the same symptom with their high end 304... One of the v blocks were broken...

You might have dropped something on it...

Only way to fix that is to replace the v block... I've got the replacement part from Ohous diretly...

For 505, it could be cheaper / quicker to buy a new one...

Also look to make sure the damper plate on the end of the beam is free to float and not getting hung up/contacting in the slot.

Think these things have magnetic damping. Something interfering at that end?
Looking at mine, if the V blocks got out of alignment, the beam could rub on the indicator bracket.

Yup...I've had to clean mine a couple times. Something must be rubbing or sticking somewhere. Otherwise there isn't much that can go wrong with those things. Being a little more paranoid or OCD than most...I always confirm every few loads with my old scale as well....just gives me peace of mind.
