OK--OK It is just tooo nice outside to spend some time at the desk, but you guys deserve it. So here goes, Chapter 1
The conception of the Bison Hunt for me started in 2006. I got the " BUG" like a few of you have felt. I started asking some of my hunting buds if anyone would be interested. Some thought it would be fun
others gave me are you crazy look. A year passes but I still have the itch.
I start doing the homework , maps , phone calls , sitting behind the PC
. My file is getting bigger a plan is starting to emerge. Now to find some adventurist souls to come with me. So I try the OA, a few of you readers might remember my first attempt in getting a posse together. Lots of interest but when it came down to the wire a couple of guys I knew backed out and the trip folded
.
2008 , boy time flys ! Lets send an all call for a hunt in spring of 09. I started early in 08 and the Alberta hunt helped fuel my fire. Some of the great stories and pictures, I was sleepless many a night.
My list grew, a couple of guys stuck with me though the years, Thanks Steve and Andy. Others signed on , soon I had eight.
I won't bore you with the logistics of planing for this trip, but I brought everything to run the Base camp and a spike camp. When I get this picture resizing figured out they will speak for themselves !
We had 8 guys , four trucks , 2 enclosed trailers,2 flatbed trailers, I brought 4 sleds 7 skimmers, quad with blade. The guys rented 5 sleds an Steve brought the one I did up for him.
Day 1 the drive up to Highlevel long drive
hoteled it that night -30 C.
Day 2 Brad and Mark went for a airplane ride while the rest of us drove to our Basecamp site and set it up.
Day 3 The hunt is on!
For the next week we fought the 4 feet of bottomless snow cold weather and long days. The widetrack sleds I brought worked good but the Bravos had a tough time if they went off the trail. We put on over 700 KM (each sled)and burnt up 1500L of gas. The deep snow really made it tough, we couldn't get into some of the areas I wanted to go. Some of the locals who stopped by for coffee said this was the most snow in 15 years.
We only had grief with a couple of the locals, I'm glad we had Andy and my dog Kokanee in camp. We met some great guys. They shared some hunting spots , gave us some ideas and support. ( thanks George for filling up the hottub and Richard for giving us the map of the caribou park and putting us on some Bison areas. Keith thanks for clearing us a camp site.
Well I need to get some work done so I will let Steve , Brad, Mark, Preston, Joe, and Andy add a couple of chapters.
