Altering a magazine to make it legal
Hi all,
Just received my 6.5 Grendel AR15 variant from Prophet River... Great service, friendly staff; all worked perfect...
So, I ordered the rifle with two 4 rd. magazines. It is standard 10 rd. straight magazine tube with modified spring as can be seen in attached picture.
Looking at the criminal code, I'm not exactly sure if this is a permanent alteration that would fulfill the requirements.
Questions in my mind are;
- Is it ok to keep them like this?
- Is it ok to cut a few coild from the bottom, and open up a few so it will be 5 rounds?
Appreciate any feedback...

I could be wrong but that doesn't look legal to me,I mean if you can remove that "so called plug" then it isn;t a permenant 'pin' to five rounds right?

The "so called plug" is part of the spring, so if you remove the plug, you deactive the magazine. You'll need a wire cutter to increase capacity.
Criminal code states;
(a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;
(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method.
c is for plastic magazines so not an option for me.
Too many "or"s in the paragraph, that is why I'm looking for experienced feedback...
Thanks anyways...

what about dipping the compressed coil in epoxy resin? should be pretty darn permanent then (IMO)
would show intent to follow the law anyways.

To be honest i think you're just fine. As long as there's something there i don't think you'll have any problems. I've never even heard of guys getting checked never mind seeing if it was absolutely permanent or not. However let your conscience be your guide.

my range has police practicing all the time, and I have seen ten shot mags used that aren't pinned(not the police either).Not much fear there( I wouldn't do it,but then again I own bolts and levers)

If it made it across the line legally, then chances are pretty good it is legal. Let it be.

What kind of Mag is it. If it was designated a Pistol Magazine, you can keep it at 10rnds even if used in a rifle. I don't know if anyone makes a pistol/mags in 6.5 grendal. They do make them in 223rem, and 7.62x39, I just ordered a few of each for my RA XCR.

Definitly something to see and Hear. LOL. Muzzle flash is about 3ft out the barrel. Not for me, but some people love it.

those are legal 10 round magazines for the ar 15, they are legal because they are designed for an AR-15 "pistol" variant, so i don't think you need a plug in them at all
oooh 6.8 ya maybe they need a plug in them, unless they say "pistol" somewhere on them like those lar-15 mags
