Recoil 22-250 Vs 243

I've been thinking of upgrading my 22-250 (55 gr bullet) to a 243 (95 gr bullet) to get a little more distance on coyotes. I do ok with the 250 because there isn't much recoil. Not really happy with admitting this but when recoil starts to become a factor so does the flinching.

I found this chart that's pretty well saying it's just over double. Well… double of next to nothing is still pretty good I'm thinking.

Anyone out there tried both? Is there a big difference in recoil?

i guess depending on the bullet grian, would still think a .243 would have double the recoil of a 22-250, still aint no cannon.

i notice more noise from the 243 but no recoil. To really appreciate the long range 243 check the flat trajectory on a 55 BT launched at 4000fps

Thanks guys. Looks like something I might actually move forward with. Got my eye on the Tikka T3 Super Varmint coupled with a Nightforce scope. Should make for a pretty good combo.

The 243win recoil is quite mild, I wouldn't be at all concerned. If you are talking about the 95gr Berger, Berger recommends a 1 in 9" twist, while the Tikka is a 1 in 10" twist.

Winchester ballistic silvertip is what I've been using since forever. How do you find out the rate of twist that Winchester recommends for the 95 gr?

I wouldn't worry about the Ballistic Silvertip at all, they aren't overly long for the weight. The 1 in 10" is good for most bullets to 100gr, as long as they aren't exceptionally long like the Berger VLD. With the 95gr VLD, 1 in 10" is marginal, but it might be okay.

I shoot a 243 with 58gr Hornadys, and my wife shoots a 22-250 with 45gr Winchesters. I wouldn't say my 243 has double the recoil, but regardless it definitely doesn't kick enough to worry about any "flinching" problems.

I'm very sensitive too but for me with the .243 it's more about noise than recoil, even on it's best day I don't think you can really say it kicks, but i still flinch..... I'll have to hunt wearing ear plugs lol.

With bullets of the same weight it is about the same as my 223, so not much recoil at all.

It is not a big banger either. I think that you'll like it.

Definitely convinced on the recoil part that for sure. Getting these responses takes all the guess work out of it.

Actualy if it is more distance your looking for then a fast twist 22-250 with 75 grain bullets and the right load is flatter and hits hader than most 243 loads. If you really want to reach out and touch something the 22-250 A.I. is all over the 243 like a tent. I shoot 75 and 80 grain at 3300 and 3400 fps and no standard 243 comes close. I have 6MM Remington and it can not keep up to my 22-250 A.I. for flat shooting or hard hitting.
Down side could be that you have to reload but for myself I hardly ever buy factory amo so it is no big deal.
Just a thought to remeber a 22-250 with a 1-14 barrel is a totaly different gun than a 22-250 with a 1-8 barrel.

The wife and I shoot both and its so close its barely even noticeable. Try the 55grs nosler ballistic tips at around 3700 to 4000 fps in the .243 They are deadly.

The real downside, of course, is that you can't use them to hunt deer or larger legally in this province.
