Question Coyote Behaviour: High Winds

Hey guys (and gals) I was wondering if somebody could bequeath some coyote knowledge on me. I went out for a call this morning east of Calgary and the winds were absolutely howling.
I got skunked at both stands and then decided to save the tips of my appendages and do a little scouting. I finally spotted one dog hanging out in a marsh at about 11:30 as I was driving back into the city.
Any idea how they typically behave when it is really windy? I would imagine maybe they stick to the bush a little more?
Any suggestions on calling? I felt like my calls were only making it about 10 feet upwind.
Thanks,
Willy

Like most critters, the wind spooks them and they don't like moving as much. As well, if you are hunting in an open area the wind will dissipate the sound of your call and they probably won't even hear it. When it's windy I try to find a spot well inside the treeline like a small opening and try calling there. I rarely have any luck on really windy days but you still might catch one or two having a nap in the middle of a field.

Yeah, that was about what I was thinking. Possibly down in a coulee or river valley if one could find such a thing?

If it's very cold and windy, my experience has been they go to ground.
I have had some success in windy conditions by calling in the cover. It's a lot more work and maybe a guy's time is better spent skinning and stretching on those days.

Chances are they aren't hearing the calls. I don't even bother going out when it's windy. Get a buddy to call to you from 50 yards away when it's windy, see what you hear.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not going to lie, turning around and going back to bed isn't a terrible decision to have to make instead of facing that wind for the next 3 hours.

Went out in the wind and cold this morning and couldn't get anything closer than 400 yds and they'd hang up. Most likely because I was so cold I couldn't stop moving lol. I was calling In a coulee/river valley area where to wind wasn't as bad. Better luck tomorrow I guess.

I saw 6 on the way into town today, most were out and cruising around looking for food. Hardest part in the wind is they can't hear you.
