Default re-barrel a 25-06

It's on a Tikka m695. Question is - Can I re-barrel it with a 257 Weatherby? Without changing anything else? Or does the 257 Wby have a different bolt face?

The barrel's getting a little tired. Groups are opening up. Near as I can calculate, over the 15 years I've had it, this barrel's seen somewhere shy of 2k rounds. A lot of them hot.

Bolt head would need to be changed.

Just get it re barrelled to 25-06.

Or rebarrel to 25-06 AI. Mine will run close to a 257 Weatherby. H1000 and 115 Berger at 3350 fps out of a 26” Krieger. Brass lasts a long time and fire forming isn’t a big deal.

rebarrel to 280AI....you remember this chambering,,....the internet darling before the 9.3x62 which was before the 6.5 Creedmoor. It still works.
Or standard 280 is a good one I hear.

X2 as I have a 25-06 Mashburn with same speed as A1, but they are a little on the warm side, 58 gr. H4831 surplus.

I'd go 25-06 again but if you want a change I'd do a 280

I appreciate the responses there, folks. Some good suggestions. The 25-06 has been a good round. And that rifle is my favourite to shoot - it just feels best. I've lost track how many deer I've taken with it. But like someone mentioned above, I'd like a change.

Some more questions - Does the 25-06AI shoot well? I know someone that's having a heckuva time to group well with that round.

Same question for the 280AI. Is it finicky (both rounds for that matter) to load for?

I've got a 270Win as well so I'll likely be more inclined to go with the 25.

Oh, and I've got a 338 as well. It's a bit of a cannon, though. 338 Imperial mag. Not very common but ballistically not far off Lapua or RUM. 4950 ft lb at the muzzle with a 250 grain. 338-06 would be fun too.

Decisions, decisions - -

Have you looked into a 6.5x55? If that's an option.

The 25-06 AI is not the problem in your friends case its his rifle or reloading no reason it wont be as good or better than a standard 25-06

No accuracy problems with my 25-06 AI. I also have a 280AI Cooper. It’s accurate as well with 4831SC and 168 gr Berger Classic Hunters. There’s lots of choices if re barreling a long action non magnum bolt face. Really depends what you are wanting to do with the rifle. If you’re not afraid of brass prep I’d recommend a 6.5 Sherman. 270 parent case that will drive a 140 gr at 3300 fps. Mines extremely accurate.

To convert your tikka to a magnum cartridge would require the bolt face opened up to accommodate the magnum cartridge and the extractor would require some modification .
