Selling coyote hides
If one is to shoot coyotes on private land can you ship them to auction with out a trappers licence?
I've been putting up some coyotes that I shoot around the farm but wondering if I can sell them legally.

I'm not up on the regs these days and I think they've changed.....used to be if you're on the farm you just had to give your land location.

I believe you're good-to-go... I'm in the same boat, and have contacted MartyS.
I suggest you do the same, PM Marty.

You need a trappers license to ship to an auction or fur buyer

Nope. Maybe to send to auction, I don’t know, but as a fur buyer all that I need is your WIN number if you are selling shot dogs.

anyone can sell legally harvested coyotes from crown land or private land.
if you dont have a trappers license then a fur buyer will take your WIN card number.
you can setup a NAFA account without a trapper license but i think you need to call them with your info.

I'll wait till MartyS replies, but I think you'll find that the case is...
With proof of permission on, or ownership of, private land that "shot" coyotes are harvested on they can legally be sold to fur buyers OR Auction.

No proof of anything is required to sell whole shot coyotes to a fur buyer, just your WIN number. There are no affidavits or sworn statements to sign declaring that the Yotes were taken legally. Private property that you own or have permission to hunt on or crown land when in season......it’s all good.
BTW, I believe that it is illegal to allow the pelt of a coyote shot on crown land to go to waste. On private land you can just throw them in the bush. Not so on crown land.

You can legally leave coyotes for the birds . Not considered a fur bearing animal like a bear or cougar. Can sell whole dogs to whoever you please but can not send to nafa without a trappers license.

where have you found your info?
you are legally required to salvage coyotes pelts taken on crown land. private land is exempt from that requirement if the coyotes are shot for predator control.
coyotes are a furbearing animal as listed in the trapping manual along with a number of other species like skunks ans red squirrels
you can only sell whole coyotes to someone with a furbuying license. if the pelt is tanned, only then can you sell to anyone you wish.
you do not need a trapping license to sell with NAFA as long as the furbearer is legally harvested.
i can get a fur buyers license and buy fur, put it up and send it i to NAFA.

I think that you are nailing it, Phil. I used to know all this stuff but I've forgotten a lot so I'm reluctant to state it as fact.
I believe that shooting furbearers on private property falls under the Alberta Pest Control Act and therefore there is no requirement to salvage the pelts. Beaver is another one that you don't have to salvage the pelt if they are trapped or shot as nuisance animals. I suppose that raccoon would be another.

Maybe I'm thinking about when I inquired about sending them to International Tannery, they mentioned something about " proof" I think...
Either way, I'll be sending my fur to MartyS soon.

John, it sounds like you are referring to the Export Permit to ship fur out of province. The permit is required for furbearing animals but coyotes are exempt and a permit isn't required for them.
I'm thinking that the "proof" part refers to F&W confirming that class A furbearers, sheep, etc were taken legally so they can tag Class A furbearers, plug sheep horns, etc. That's a whole different ball of wax.
Exporting Other Wildlife
In most cases, exporting wildlife or wildlife parts from Alberta requires an export permit from Fish and Wildlife. Be sure to contact the local Fish and Wildlife Division office for advice on acquiring the necessary permits before exporting any kind of wildlife.
When applying for the export permit, you will need to prove you are legally in possession of the wildlife to be exported. You may have to bring the wildlife to be exported in to the Fish and Wildlife office for inspection.
Grizzly bear, trophy sheep, goat, cougar, wolves (from certain Wildlife Management Units), lynx, otter, fisher and wolverine require a registration certificate before an export permit will be issued. Registration certificates are issued at a Fish and Wildlife office.

Dave, I talked to F&W today and was told if coyotes are shot on private land that you have permission to hunt on you can sell hide with a win card but on crown you need a wildlife certificate and can only hunt during the season. There are other rule that come into effect on crown land that is leased that relate to the lease holder..

If i dont hunt or fish i have no need for a WIN card so im not sure why a WIN card would be required to sell coyotes shot on my own land.

If shot on your own land that is what I record on my fur buyer recipient. Your name and address is also recorded in case F&W wants to look into it further. Been buying fur for 15 years and have never been questioned about the way I do this.

Mike, all that I’ve ever asked for is what’s on the Fur Dealer Transaction Record.....Date Recieved, Name, Address and Fur Management Licence # (WIN # for shot dogs if no Trapping license). All of the shot dogs that i’ve Bought are taken on private property but if a a Wildlife Certificate is required for crown land, it makes me wonder if the certificate number shouldn’t be recorded instead of the WIN in cases like that. Bureaucracy, ya gotta love it......lol.
I’ve never come across someone hunting private property selling shot dogs who didn’t have a WIN. I’ll cross that bridge if it ever happens.

Here's another...
Question...
- Are " shot" coyotes graded or valued by fur-buyers differently than trapped dogs ?

Yes Dave the wildlife certificate # is recorded in this instance. I have a couple of farmers that don’t hunt or fish so don’t have a win#.

John because of damage from shooting instead of trapping you could expect to be docked depending on amount of damage. If you are selling whole carcasses the fur buyer has to fix that hole. If you do your own hides how much you will be docked if at all will depend on the repair job that you do.

Depends on damage and how well your repair is. Could pass over it or could get graded slight or extreme damage.
