Default Starting old diesel Deere skid steer

I have an older skid steer. It turns over great and start, but then stalls after a few seconds. Then it takes several minutes of cranking to get it started again.

Any thoughts on why this occurs?

Fuel filter?

Depending how long it sat.

Use a fuel conditioner, change fuel filters.

I work on alot of skidsteers and that would be my first go-to with what you have said

Default Fuel

I would first change fuel filter and empty and clean the water separater if it has one. It could be a worn out lift pump.

I’d drain out as much fuel as I could get, new filters, new fuel. Would consider running some seafoam through it as well. Had a old skid steer that ran very poorly and I ran new fuel with some seafoam and it seemed to clean a lot of gunk out, keep in mind it’s it’s gona fill your yard with smoke after the seafoam is added.

It sounds to me like you could be getting air in your fuel system.

When it finally starts again does it run or does it stall again?

When it first starts does it crank for a long time before it starts?

The fuel is running back. It will have a leak in the fuel system allowing air to enter when it sits.
Very common on Diesel engines. And can also be very hard to locate.
Could even be a simple as a bad o-ring on the fuel filter base from the last filter change.
Check all the connections and packings on the low pressure side.

Worst case it could be the injection pump.
In the 30 years I have been doing some are a challenge to track down.

If you need any more info send me a pm. I have access to manuals and lots of info. I have worked for Deere for over 25 years

I should add, if you don't use this much and it's not to big of a pain to you
Just try pumping the fuel up before you crank it.

Lots of guys do this instead of trying to find the leak
