Default Attn Knife makers...

I'm not a knife connoisseur, but I do love them. I found a knife that my Mom gave to me when I was 8 years old. I've managed to hang onto it through all our moves. I'd like to restore it back to use and good looks. Is there any salvaging this thing? The handle is made up of separate rings of leather.
How can I polish up the steel, and give it a good edge? I would also like to find a nice looking leather sheath for it, but don't know where to look.

Can't wait to see how this turns out! I'm a bit of a sentimental guy, so I can totally understand you wanting to get that thing spiffed up!

As for polishing the steel, check at a good tool supply company. There is a liquid that is used for cast/steel table saws to remove rust and such. Elbow grease, steel wool or scotch bright pad and that will be good to go.

Or just try WD40 and a scotch bright pad.

I have a wool polishing pad on my bench grinder that would do a quick job of cleaning that.

Default leather

Any saddle maker or leather worker can make you a sheath.

Flat wheel for the blade, some buffing compounds and a buffing wheel on a grinder. You'll get it looking good again.

I would start with 400 grit sand paper to clean it up. Than finish it with 600 or 800 wet sanding.
If you want a mirror look and you have a bench grinder you can buy a felt disc and some polishing compound. Just be really carefull it can throw the blade at you if you dont hold it tight and at the right angle.

You might be able to take the knife apart by unscrewing the back. You can change the leather discs. And it will also give you better access to clean everything up.

Try to make the sheat by yourself. You can buy all the supplies in shops like Tandy leather or maybe even Michaels.
Just pour yourself a nice glass of whiskey and get to work. Its fun!
