Default Do you shoot coyotes while big game rifle hunting?

While big game rifle hunting, if an opportunity to kill a coyote presented itself, do you take the shot or do you stay quiet? Do you think rifle shots ruin your chances for big game hunting that day in the area?

yes I do from one site to the next if I see one I will shoot it or shoot at it and if I get one I collect it and give it to my neighbor he knows what to do with it but if I'm in my spot hunting I will not shoot

No coyotes for me during harvest season.

I'd hate to miss out on the opertunity missing the small bucks or medium size Elk.

I take this opertunity to hone my skills of snapping some pictures well remaining in the mode of silence.

That way I know my plan is working.

Don as I force my self to remain as part of the forests, the on going challanges of constant.

I do , but its time and place. I have property that I hunt on that the landowner said he wanted all coyotes shot if I am to hunt there. But I do it at my convenience. For example on Sunday I was hunting a piece of property and had been sitting for quite awhile when some yotes came out . I was just about ready to pack up anyways so I took one of them .

I won't shoot them with my 30-06 as I would want to mitigate fur damage.

My buddy was out with me targeting coyotes last week. He took a shot at a coyote from our spot. I shot my WT buck later that day from the same spot.

For me, once my tags are filled then the varmint rifle comes out.

I normally wouldn't, I'm concentrating on deer hunting usually.

I didn’t used to as I didn’t want to spook other game but a couple years ago I shot one that wouldn’t leave the area I was hunting. I went and pulled him about 100 yards behind my blind and 20 minutes later I had a 150” whitetail come strolling through. I shoot coyotes every opportunity now.

Reminds me of when I was field dressing a young buck with my hunting buddy. Looked up and there was another one standing about 15 feet away staring at me and wondering what I was doing to his buddy.

I tend to like coyote hunting more than other hunting so for me all hunts are a coyote hunt waiting to happen.

I don't. I have no interest in harvesting the fur, so can't justify shooting them. If I knew somebody that would take 'em and skin 'em, sure.

I typically don't, as I don't want to mess up the fur with my rocket launcher.

I have not had the opportunity (they have always been too far away), but my primary landowner has asked me to shoot, so I would. Least I can do.

I shoot coyotes when given the chance. I actually think that it can be a help to fire a shot. Sometimes it gets the animals up out of their beds and moving around.

Any time I have a rifle and have a coyote in sight I shoot it.

Got to thin down the herd, they're everywhere around here, I have them come into my fenced backyard at night and will often see them wonder around the house during the day...

I shot 6 this year alone. If its morning or evening prime times though they get a pass. Funny thing is, 3 of the larger bucks I have shot stopped to sniff the area where I had killed the coyote. Must be a good luck thing for me.

Default Wolves?

If I see them, I shoot them.

Same question for wolves...does this change your thoughts at all? If you see a wolf while in your stand would you shoot it or let it pass?

Every hunt is a coyote hunt.

If I lose one day of hunting by spooking deer, but save 10 or more deer from that coyote, I think my odds of tagging a deer are better.

For sure. Heres a lucky one from a couple days ago. A twig saved him.

Time an place while hunting big game, but occasionally I cant resist and just take em. The best was a couple years back, early morning, shot my whitetail. Quartered it and threw it in the snow to cool. While waiting, I pulled out the foxpro. Hammered a yote in 10 minutes. Great day. I plan on trying that Saturday.

Do we have to save the fur if on public land with a coyote or wolf or do they just fall under varmint?

If I’m in my blind I try not too,as some have said I’m always afraid to scare any deer in the area away. But after checking my cameras a week ago,I have no choice but to start blasting since this is where my blind is set up

Coyote – A Resident, Non-resident or Non-resident Alien who holds a Non-resident/Non-resident Alien Wolf/Coyote licence may, except in WMUs 728 and 730, hunt (but not trap) coyote

a) throughout the year on privately owned land and on public land in the White Area, to which he or she has the right of access to hunt;

b) on public lands in the Green Area to which he or she has the right of
access to hunt, from the opening day of a big game season in a particular WMU to May 31, 2018 or until June 15 if the hunting is in a WMU that has a spring season for black bear ending on that date.

In Camp Wainwright (WMUs 728 and 730) a Resident may hunt coyote from January 5 until the end of February.

It is unlawful, with the following exceptions, to allow the pelt of any furbearing animal to be wasted:

It is not legally necessary to salvage pelts of 1) furbearing animals taken in accordance with regulations authorizing control of problem wildlife, or 2) coyotes harvested, by residents, outside of public lands in the Green Area.
