Default Driveway

Remove the black dirt, it only sucks up moisture like a sponge. Moisture is the enemy of a good road. Clay sheds moisture, so be sure to shape it to let infiltrations to the ditches. Make absolutely sure that all water runs away from your road. Pooling water is your enemy. Depending on your budget, use a Geogrid on top of the clay before laying gravel. Put about six inches of gravel on top of clay. Make sure you maintain a 2% crown on your road. A good 3/4 inch crush should do the trick with gravel. Follow these tips and your driveway will last longer than you.

Thanks for the info. Ya I'm going to strip black and need to elevate the road for blowing snow. I have talked to a local guy who would do it with a grader. Im just woried that he wont get enough grade to drain the ditches. I don't want standing water in ditches. So I'm thinking I might need to bring clay in or dig a dugout which wouldn't hurt my feelings.
But would add to my cost.
Thanks
Brad

Thanks trophybook. I talked to Harvey, seems like a good guy. He's going to come out and take a look. Turns out he has property a mile away from my place.

For the guys that have done residential roads what would be your recommended width for a good combo of economy and function?
