Default Anyone Goose Hunting Still?

Just curious to see if anyone here is still after the flyers. I know that all types of hunting is going on around the province now, but I was out for Geese a couple of times now and the morning was as close to great as it could get, but was a total bust. Missed the perfect spot by about 100 yards.

Has everyone turned onto the furry animals now and forgotten about our feathered friends?

No Geese left up here that I know of, so no.

But there are some ducks around. The ponds are almost all frozen over so I guess they couldn't find any water to land on last night. So they landed on the highway. It was wet from us salting the ice and I think the ducks thought it was a river or something.

I saw the first on around 10:00pm. I figured it was a wounded duck that couldn't fly south since it seemed to be having trouble flying, but then I saw another, then a pair, then another pair. Then I started see ducks flattened by traffic and then there seemed to be ducks everywhere. There were ducks walking, ducks running, ducks just sitting on the road, ducks flying in and landing, there were hundreds.

I picked up one that wouldn't move off the highway and put it in the grader with me. It spent the night in the grader and this morning I set it free.
At first it seem to have trouble flying, but after a bit it got airborne and flew away.

The ravens had their fill today. By noon they wouldn't even look at a dead duck.

Never even would've imagined they'd do that, Keg. Strange and then some.

A friend of mine who was many years older (deceased now) told me that he was hunting around Thompson, MB a long time ago. Much of the water was frozen, and the geese circled around town all night long, so loud he claimed he couldn't even sleep. His best guess was that the geese thought the hue of the lights may have looked like water to them, and they just kept circling and circling.

AND ran into a super late flock of Specks!!!

Awsome hunt!

Then it was off for pheasants Sun.

Lots of geese. If you can find open sections of river.. They'll be packed full!

Going to bag me an elk this morning... Life's tough!

An old native friend of mine from Fort Chip told me of an instance just like that once- birds falling right out of the sky.
This was before the "Duckgate" incident at Syncrude, which , he said was likelyb the same thing, NOT the ducks landing on the tailings ponds.
he figured it was because of a weather comndition ;like ice and fog...

I have seen tons of geese flying over Calgary in the last few days. I am going out for pheasants this weekend and I am hoping to see some low flying geese coming in for a landing that I might be able to take a shot at.

When we used to bird hunt more, we often had some of our best shoots this time of the year. Birds are prime. Some scouting around larger water and with no snow in the fields, shouldn't be a problem if you can get permission. Sometimes it was just a small hole in the ice on a large lake. Cold and feeding heavy, sometimes all day, for the long flight. Good luck, dress warm, clean the semis well and use bigger shot to penetrate those heavy, easy plucking feathers.

The snows are here...finally!
Thousands flying in every direction round Rattlesnake.
Alot of mallards too...
Got out for an evening of shooting....alot of missing unfortunately!
Still a good night tho when the old dog chases down a few birds and acts like hes a pup when he's 10!
Ended up with 4 snows and a couple of ducks...should have had more but it seems since eye surgery that I've become an even worse shot!
Which I did'nt think was possible!

I am looking out my office window and I keep seeing "V's" flying over. I am guessing that the birds will be landing in the sloughs and lakes and rivers that are not frozen so I bet it will be a good weekend for goose hunting. I am going to be out at dawn tomorrow.

Just was driving home and there was a field and dugout full of greenheads. So many that they were keeping the water open in the dugout.
