Default 7.62x39 question

Is anyone know if 7.62x39 legal use for big game hunting in Alberta? Knowing some people use sks for close range on whitetail, but the hunting education book say no person hunt big game use ammunition have a cartridge case less than 1.75inches.

How old is your hunter education book? The regulations have changed since it was written. You are better off reading the current regulations.

7.62x39 is kosher, just make sure you get the soft point rounds.
The full metal jacket surplus rounds that are most common in that calibre aren't allowed for hunting.

Read the regulations, the only restriction is caliber, it was changed when the WSSM cartridges were introduced.

To be perfectly honest I don't recall reading anything about case length or overall length. 1.75 inches would disqualify the .44 Magnum for deer?!

I've read of length disqualifications in the States, and maybe Ontario has had(?) something like that.

I guess there was at one time, just don't recall when it changed. I must have not hunted in Alberta at that time.

Why not just get a 308 or 30-06 and leave the gopher gun in the safe, big bears will have you half way down their gullet before they run out of blood from the half dozen rounds from a 7.62x39.
Happy hunting, or happy hunted...............

I brought out a CZ527 in 7.62x39 to get a whitetail last year. Dropped it the same way a 30-06 would, used Winchester soft point ammo 123gr if I remember right. Know your limit and stay within it for this round - distance wise. Would not go bigger than deer with it or shoot much past 200 yards.

Huh? 7.62x39 is a very capable hunting round similar in most respects to a 300 sav. And where did he say he was hunting big bears?? For that matter at 30 yds a big bear couldn't tell the difference between a 7.62x39 and 7.62x61 (308) and as for size of hole the 7.62x39 will leave a bigger hole than a 308 excluding any expansion. .311-.313 for the 7.62 and .308 for the 308

Ok, I’ll let my buddy know who shot a better than average black bear that his 7.62x39 SKS wasn’t sufficient to dispatch his bear.
