Mauser 96 bolt shroud re-work 002 (600x800).jpg

Mauser 96-38 Bolt Shroud 002.jpg

Just picked up this Oberndorf M96-38 and checked out the re-worked bolt shroud and cocking piece. I can't find any references to that type of work and thinking it must be a custom job. Has anyone seen anything like that before?

I wonder if the safety was changed as well? Don't all Mausers have a 3 position safety?

It has a Timney trigger with side safety installed. So far it appears to be an 96-38 Sporter, limited contract build by Mauser Oberndorf for Carl Gustav via contract. No numbers match but is 's a very nice build. S/N is 492_ _.
Action is stamped Mauser Waffenfabrik Oberndorf AN 1900

My M96 looks identical to yours and has a Timney trigger as well. Mine is an 1899 manufacturing date with serial 110XX. I suspect these were sporterized by some skilled folks, but I have no idea what company.

Looks like ours are both part of the 50,000 rifle contract that Mauser built for C.Gustav in 1899/1900. The S/N series ended at 50,000. I think you are right. Somebody did some custom work on a batch of them. I recently saw a pic of another on the interweb, so there must be a few around. It sure would be interesting to learn who did that work. Does your stock have 18 lpi checkering ?
