Default PAL renewal

Hoping for some direction regarding my PAL renewal. It expired March if 2023. I sent everything in Nov 2022 and have yet to receive the new one back.

The payment has been processed. And the status on line says “in process”. I have waited on hold multiples times for a few hours but usually something comes up and I need to hang up.

Does anyone know a better way to find out the status of the PAL?

Thanks,

Try calling at different times , and asking for the Alberta CFO extension. The Alberta CFO is the one that can actually help you. Personally, I send in my renewal application 364 days before my PAL expires, and after 4-5 months, I will be contacting the Alberta CFO, if the status hasn't changed.

Renewed mine on line March 27, received it August 8. Phone the RCMP PAL verification line for gun sales, I got through very quickly and they were able to tell me the status of my renewal. 1-800-731-4000

I would call. Mine expired beginning of July. I did it online mid July and had the card 2 weeks later.

Apparently you can check status online too, haven't done it, but sounds way less annoying than waiting on the phone forever.

You can check, but the only status I have every seen is something like "initial checks have been completed." On my last renewal, it stayed like that for 7 months, I finally called and they approved it while I was on the phone.

Could you imagine if our renewal for a driver's license worked like this?

You can. And it will say in progress. But never an ETA. I will call tomorrow. Thanks all. I appreciate the numbers, info and extensions!

My renewal was sent Nov 2022 as my PAL was to expire Jan 2023. As of yesterday, no PAL yet, but after sending an email to the Alberta CFO about 3 weeks ago, got a reply from them this morning. I quote some of the reply:

Thank you for your email. As per our system, your eligibility checks have been completed, and your file is now in a que for a review to be done by a Firearms Agent. Each application takes a different amount of time depending on the individual circumstances.

As for timelines, there is a backlog of applications that the ACFO is working to complete, and we thank you for your continued patience while we work through this process. Our ACFO team is working diligently to reduce the wait times; however, please note: new applications can, if secondary or tertiary reviews are required, take up to 12 – 18 months, renewals 6 – 12 months and transfers between 5 – 6 months for completion.

Recently, the Government of Alberta announced the expansion of the ACFO which will commence shortly. Additionally, staff will be hired to support the current team of dedicated individuals to better address the needs of the public.

So basically if you can only apply a year in advance for a renewal and it is taking a year to process they are making a criminal out of people. The system is very flawed.

Contact your MLA and tell him or her what is happening. I applied Jan 2023, PAL expired Mid Aug 2023 still nothing. Contacted my MP and they said contact MLA. Mla sent my email to CFO. Within 4 days it was approved by phone. Still took 3 weeks to get it from Can. Post.

Update - Waited on hold last week for almost 2 hours. Eventually had to leave for hockey tryouts so I had to hang up. It did end up showing up yesterday.

Submitted Nov 1/22. Received Sept 19/23. Just be smart and give yourself lots of time.

Crazy I just renewed my passport a year early because of what happened with my PAL. Received my passport in just over 20 days. I don’t get it
