Crows back yet?
Just curious if anybody's been out for crow yet? This has looked like a lot of fun in past threads & I've been looking forward to trying it.

Never knew crows migrated anywhere. I see them all winter long. Never felt the urge to shoot any, but have nothing against someone who does.

Hmmmmm... Just spent some time on Google and am more confused then when I started. Some sites say crows migrate sometimes and some say they don't. Same site that says ravens don't migrate also states that they are solitary birds that ussually travel in pairs except when they MIGRATE, and then they could be in a flock or "gang" of hundreds. Clear as mud, though I know I see crows all winter long here in central AB.

Haven't seen any yet near camrose. Should be seeing flocks of hundreds pretty soon. See Ravens all winter long.

Are you certain you're seeing crows all winter Waterninja? They usually leave in large flocks in September. A raven has more of a V shape tail.

There are Crows showing up all the way to Athabasca. I saw the first pair of the year Mar 3 near Genesee. Quite a few today N of Edmonton.

Yup, ravens are larger too - up to 1.5x. Ravens tend to either be solitary or in small groups of just a few individuals. Vocalizations are different too - ravens vocalizations are a throaty 'quork', crows are harsh 'caw, caw'. Raven bills are larger & tails are diamond shaped. Crow tails are blunt & they have medium-sized bills.
It could just be because I've been out in the country more this winter and have just been noticing them more, but I've seen more ravens than I can ever recall seeing. Pretty much positive not one of these has been a crow. Another AOer in the Londonderry area is pretty sure he's had crows all winter in his area though, so I guess it's possible that not every crow migrates.

The raven population has really increased in the last few years. I think the expansion of Suburbia and Rural development is the cause. Lots of new food sources for them. This applies to Crows as well. They seem to increase close to 20% each year .. around here anyway. I can't recall the last fledgling Robin I've seen in my yard. The Crows, Ravens and Magpies get them all and the County (Parkland) and the many new rural residents don't give it a thought.
Frustrating as Hell.

The older mated pairs are the first to arrive. The bulk of them will show up in large flocks around the first of April. Then the fun begins !

I have found that large numbers of Magpies as well as some crows swarm in when using my rabbit in distress call. Just wondering if you also shoot magpies?

I have moved from using 7.5 to 6's as there are so many ravens coming into my crow sets.

I'm seeing lots of Crows north of Peace River.
They've been here for almost two weeks.
I've never seen a Crow around here between November and March.
