Default Minnows?

What is the deal with the minnow shortage? Covid related?

None to be had here in Whitecourt for a while. I was at the Fishin Hole last week and they were sold out, but had a sign that said due to shortages limit 2 tubs per person.

I'd heard there was a shortage because of a bad harvest this year for the suppliers in Sask/MB, but not sure if that's true. Our local Canadian Tire has almost always had plenty of supply this year...

Water was too high and fast when the minnows run and they have a short harvest window. I know candle lake got like 1/100th of what he normally does.

They only have a limited time once a year to net their minnows with their permits. If things do not work well for timing it can be a rough year for supply. They then go into cold storage for the rest of the year. That's why there is really no such thing as fresh minnows after about June. This time of year they are actually getting close to a year old less a few months.
