A 105 tank round ain’t got nothing on a 155 arty round lol

I remember the first time I heard indirect fire coming in while on patrol. Didn’t know what was happening until they burst. Amazing how you can hear them coming through the air!

Made me chuckle a bit when I saw it. Some pretty impressive speeds out of a couple of the AP rounds. Charge weights in oz instead of grains or pounds. Puts a few things in perspective too. Got plinker rounds, varmint rounds and blow the livin krap out of them rounds. Wonder if the artillery guys have the same dialogue as gun owners about them.

Yes gunners do have their lingo but not sure if politically correct these days. Illum rounds: turn the lights on for those that are lost on the way to the obj, Shake and Bake is 50% HE and WP... more that won't make past the mods. The good old days!

I was thinking more in terms of "my 105cm is better than yer 120winmag" and "my 120winmag is better than yer 155 weatherby" .

Yeah, there's always been that, especially when all the Regts l had the 155s except Petawawa which had the105s. They thought we were chipping bark off the trees in Petawawa while they would be cratering the impact area elsewhere. And the range difference: 105 good for an 11 km shot with a 30ish lb projectile, the 155 with a 95ish lb projectile could range to 18km with conventional loads (now much further with the rocket assist). But all one big happy gunner family in the end.

An important distinction with the artillery, is that it's drilled into us at an early age that "the weapon of the artillery is the projectile" . The howitzers, launchers, planes etc are just a delivery system. But some argued that self propelled was better than towed, 155 vs 105 vs 203, blah blah. End of the day it's rounds on time and on target...just like hunting. Hunters do the same when they pick a projectile for their rifle for grain weight and construction to get that round on target and achieve the effect.
