Default Getting a found dead rack mounted.

Another thread got me thinking.

Would you ever get a rack mounted that you found or sheds put onto a form for a shoulder mount?

It always seems like any buck hit in the ditch has its antlers removed. I’ve done it before to use the antlers in crafts or just to look at in the pile, but wouldn’t feel right having them on the wall. I have a friend who found a big set of sheds and got them put on a shoulder mount, it looks good and he had history with the deer and will tell everyone they are just sheds.

My opinion might change if I found a monster deadhead.

What do you guys do with the antlers? Thoughts?

I found two 5 x 5's last winter while coyote hunting that had locked up and perished during the rut. Antlers were in perfect condition, I brought them home and hung them up on a skull hooker in the garage. Something to jaw about when having a few rums in the garage.

I wouldn't shoulder mount a dead head though, I'm not spending money on a deer I didn't kill.

No interest in keeping road kill antlers unless I know someone who needs a set for rattling or maybe a craft project

Most deer I just leave be unless I have a craft project in mind. If it was a true monster I would likely euro mount it on a skull hooker and have it in the garage or less prominent position in the house as a conversation piece.

I was really reluctant to mount the big deer I shot this year even though I always said I would mount a deer if it was bigger than the one I already had mounted. I’d gladly keep a set of found antlers to have laying around but I wouldn’t spend the money on a mount. That might change if I found a 220” set of whitetail antlers, but I’m still not convinced I would spend the money to have it mounted.

I love big racks...
A few years ago a client and i found a dead head in the red deer river valley. I suspect someone shot it from the top, but didn’t follow up to check - and it died out of sight. Anyway, It was bleached by the sun really bad, but a beauty rack that gross scored 195-ish. I kept it, got a permit for it. Several years later, i shot a nice 170” buck. Wasn’t going to get a shoulder mount of it, but used the cape off that buck and had the found dead antlers mounted. The taxidermist dyed the antlers (did a wonderful job) and now i have a beauty shoulder mount out of the buck... i don’t tell people i killed it, that would be ridiculous - but it’s a nice animal and looks great on the garage wall. The pics don’t do it justice.
Kudos to Chris at Bruin taxidermy in Calgary for bringing this buck back to life!

I hear ya there. Took me 10 years to mount a 196” gross wt. I shot. Obviously a different cape but now that it’s on the wall I wish I had done it years ago.

The one I shot is about the same size, it’s easy to say you’ll mount it but when it happens, and you’re looking at a $1200 taxidermy bill it’s not so easy to do.

I once bought one of those plastic skulls and screwed a set of sheds to it, that’s as much money as I’ll spend on a found deer I think.

I paid for a euro on a whitetail I found, only cause it was right where I was the night before, still soft, and potentially taken by the cougar I saw earlier the day before. And he was a very nice, very even five by five. 🍻

That would be a hard no for me - but then I would never put a huge set of antlers on the wall if I shot them either!

I would absolutely pick up a dead head and bring it home but I would never mount anything that I didn't get myself or one of my family members. The dead head would be top of the pile of sheds, lesser bucks and other dead heads that got drug home.

Wouldn't mount anything that I didn't kill but each to their own. With that said I have some heads mounted that others may not. More about the hunt to me and the threshold for mounting material wanders somewhere between score and the journey.

It’s not so much the $1200 as it is once they’re mounted I can’t pick them up and play with them.

x2 on this comment I use to want to get everything mounted and yes they look great on the wall but that's it with just a euro you can pick it up or others can to look at it or show certain things off. Same with hides just tan them and hang on a hook you can take them down to look at etc.

I found this one a couple year ago. Lots of character, will mount it one day. Got a permit, was pretty fresh (March) CO’s thought most likely cougar kill.

Love mounting stuff when cash flows. This is a set of sheds.
Gonna do up a whitie and a mule too. Just filling garage walls.

I found this deadhead at the far end of McLean. I thought it was a moose at first. One side has 10pts. https://imgur.com/gallery/iCG4FxG

I mount some and not others. I like to let other people handle the sheds and euros But I also like them on the wall. The capes to me are sometimes worth getting the mount done. Maybe thats the taxidermist in me.
