Tikka Magazine Issues/Problems
Considering a Tikka for a build but several reviews say that the magazine lips wear out quickly. I expect there are thousands of Tikka owners out there. Any problems out there specifically with high volume shooters? Anything else to be concerned about?

I think I’m back up to 9 Tikkas. Never had a issue with a Tikka mag ever. My only issue with using a Tikka for a build is if you are building a long action cartridge you are limited on mag length.

I have never had a customer contact me with issues with their Tikka magazines.

Tikka 5 round 223 mags have the problem you describe. I own one. After I did some research, I found that this wasn't a uncommon issue. In the end I ordered a aluminum mag from mountain tactical.

Problem with T3 mag
I’ve shot a 204R out of a T3 for several years now. Seen a few thousand rounds. And I’ve worn out 2 mags with it. The underside of the lips that hold the cartridge down, they wear off which causes the front of the cartridge to tilt too far up to chamber properly.
Got an aluminum one from watersrifleman.com. Somehow they harden the aluminum in the critical areas and it’s worked flawlessly for me.
Good to hear that doesn’t happen a lot.
That’s the only thing I have against Tikka. And Sako for that matter too. Awesum triggers on all of them, they rival a Timney I have in a Savage. And shoot as good as anything out there. And those signature super-smooth actions……

I have a brand new 223 mag from Mountain Tactical for a Tikka that needs a new home. Any reasonable offer accepted, located in Leslieville, shipping on me. I had 223 on the brain when ordering a mag for my 22-250.

The T3X now uses metal shrouds instead of plastic, so that's the "fix".
I've never had a problem with my T3X magazines. They are plastic but they work nicely. Expensive, though. A 3 round mag costs almost $100.

Certain cartridges have somewhat limited OAL length in Tikka magazines. With an internal magazine length of 2.80", chamberings in 260 Rem, 7x57, 7mm-08, 65 Swede for example don't allow most bullets to be seated close to the lands, using standard Tikka SA magazines.
I see that as an issue.

Considering a 280 ai so mag length sounds like it could be a problem for a Tikka build. Hummmmm

LA Tikka mags are 3.34" . Not sure if that's an issue or not.

If you use a long action mag and change or grind the bolt stop you would be able to seat out to 3.340”.

I'm aware there are ways to overcome this, if someone was determined to use a Tikka. For the OP, wanting a 280 AI, I suppose he would need to first establish which bullets he wants to shoot and have his gunsmith cut the chamber accordingly?

Have many tikkas. Most stock but also a couple customs. Have shot many competitions and never an issue. Except when I got mine and my wife’s magazines mixed up. She’s still upset. And I still didn’t beat her.

The Tikka M+ mag (designed for the 6.5 Creed) allows about .120" longer seating for short action cartridges. Or you can modify the medium magazine, or use the long magazine.
Bolt stops are easy to modify if you need a bit more stroke length.
